What do you do when you are triggered? How do you unwind? I want to watch Tv or netflix but everything feels too intense. Do any shows help you when you are feeling this way?

Cartoons always help, family movies seem to calm me down take my mind from reality

I use music,I pull my dog closer n I watch mindless tv.As far as the tv ,for me,watching those annoying reality shows distracts my brain with all the rediculous nonsense these people complain about.Sometimes i even break out laughing."Real housewives" shows help the most!!!

hi cantdealanymore, I totally get it. You can read my post. I felt that last night, at my wits end.

I ended up taking an ativan (what I do, not for everyone), taking a bath, and a new thing, listening to a bubbling brook and seeing the water online. Many have suggested it.

It really did help a bit, surprised me. I will see if I can put it here, not sure.

really purifying P&C! Thank you.

I think with PTSD, we are always readying ourselves for the triggers...

this predictive, peaceful "babbling brook" takes our sense out of ourselves and helps arrest those dissociated moments.

Beautiful water ..... <3

I like to watch game shows that seems to really help me and it’s very happy or I like to go online and watch funny animal videos like whatever is your favorite dog breed or just sometimes cats do funny things

That’s really great that you recognize what triggers you and what you want to avoid.

when really triggered, I turn to soft music, or meditative sounds on youtube even. Classical music always restores my faith in a higher good.

Hi. Have you tried breathing exercises and/or guided relaxation? Best wishes to you.

Comedy. I have to admit I don't turn to Netflix when I am triggered at all. It seems like most of the shows on there are very intense or horror-oriented, designed to activate. I have YouTube TV. It gets the networks. I watch comedies. Also, when I am triggered, I go for walks outside. Also, taking a shower can help. Taking a bath or shower (warm or cold) lowers your body's core temperature, which takes you more toward a parasympathetic (not aroused, calm, ready for sleep) state. I also write. Talking to others is only marginally helpful and sometimes hinders, depending on whether I feel heard. Also talking can just get me spinning. Movement is better. Hang in there.

I have to watch something light hearted. Lately i cannot watch anything dramatic, its too upsetting. I just watched toy story 4 last night! I loved it! Maybe something like a harry potter

I think ‘triggered’ is overused. Triggered is when you’re whole body and mind go back to an event and you even see that. By relying on this terminology one stays ill. I think of triggered as in ‘I’m back there’.

There are things that touch a nerve or make me irritated. If I let these things accumulate I will then lose my mind over the shop having the wrong bread or the gas being low in the car.

I have to face each irritant as it comes. I can’t keep it inside. Nothing sends me back in time if I deal with the now.

I watch movies made for kids. I don’t like movies that are loud and have lots of curse words and bombs. I want to be entertained; not have my nervous system on edge.

I hope you find what you’re looking for.

I go to the breath. As I practiced doing this, over time it set in as automatic.

I think I know what you mean when you say that everything is too intense. I find myself getting scared and anxious over the smallest things, but which become so much larger in my mind. I have found that the times when I can achieve acceptance of what is going on are helpful to me. It's hard to achieve acceptance of great difficulty, but even those things are better to accept than to deny, if you can.
