I was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease about 5.5 years ago.
With recent news online about Fructans and their potential to cause much the same symptoms as Coeliac disease, among other things, it got me wondering...
Can the consumption of Fructans have the same adverse affect on the villi of the gut lining, meaning that there is a possibility of a Coeliac diagnosis based on a biopsy being muddled up with a Fructan problem?
I ask because even though I strictly follow a gluten free diet, I still get issues with occasional bloating, sickness, diarrhoea, headaches, and extremely regular gas from both ends
I wondered if the effects in the gut might be the same, so a mis-diagnosis could be possible?
Cheers,
Rob

If you were diagnosed with a positive blood test as well as biopsy, it's unlikely to have been a misdiagnosis. Fructans don't give a false positive blood test result. Fructans can affect the bacterial balance in the gut, so they can affect the gut wall but possibly not to the same extent that gluten does, as far as I know.
Unfortunately if you are Coeliac there is a good chance that will have problems with other foods. You may need to exclude some foods for a while until your guts have recovered fully. Have a look at the low FODMAPs diet and see if it might be helpful.
Hi - casein, the protein in dairy, has a similar structure to gliadin from gluten and can cause a similar reaction in sensitive people. Might be worth keeping an eye on symptoms vs consumption of that, or maybe try excluding to see if any differences?
I’m Gluten allergic and was still unwell with a gluten free diet and just found out recently myself that I’m also casein allergic thanks to the dentist that put artificial cows bone in my jaw for a dental implant so basically try goats milk instead of cows that made my stomach better.
