cetirizine v fexofenadine

which do people find most effective at preventing angiodema/urticaria flares (partic around eyes, but also in gen)? Studies online seem to suggest cetirizine is more effective but specialists often prescribe fexo so I’m confused. Also does anyone combine them daily, and long term? And has anyone found that one used to work for them but stopped working so they switched and it was effective? Thank you!

I use the antihistamines when needed. For me personally I find the citirizine are “stronger” and more effective but make me drowsy even though they are nondrowsey. The allevia otc or stronger dose on prescription of fexofenadine works too and doesn’t make drowsy but I find not as effective or wears off quicker if that makes sense. Everyone’s different. They reckon to try different ones and find the one that works best for you. It’s true also that if you take long term the body gets used to and more dose needed and the body natural antihistamine down regulated and you don’t want that. A low histamine diet as per DR Janice Joneja information and guidance available online at foods matter dot com relating to histamine sensitivity or via her books have helped me immensely too as all helps to lower the histamine load!

Hello

I experience pruritis from a non related condition and/or its medication. I found that Cetirizine became less effective over time so I guess my body became habituated to it and switched to fexofenadine. That too became less effective and I upped the dose from 1 x 120mg to twice a day but when I asked for my prescription to be upped the GP pharmacist would only let me have 1 x 180mg and that did not cut it - so I guess I need to shop around again.....

When I had chronic rhinitis some years ago the only antihistamine that stopped it (after many tries) was Triludan but that is no longer available. It underlines that while antihistamines all have the same goal, we often need to shop around and try a new one...............
