Is the supplement Magnesium beneficial to FM sufferers.....????

I am now taking a Magnesium supplement and can honestly say that most of my symptoms have eased if not totally gone.

I'm suffering a lot with head aches but that might be due to my cutting down on my meds, from taking two Zydol + two Paracetamols 4 times a day to just one + paracetamol twice a day!

My daughter who has symptoms similar to FM is also feeling a lot better now and she is eating baby spinach leaves as a snack throughout the day - this is loaded with Magnesium and other beneficial minerals etc.

Please do some on-line research about the benefits of Magnesium in relation to FM - I can't believe that I feel so much better in myself and would love to know if anyone else who tries it has the same benefits.

I just looked around for some information on this... And I have read that people with fibro sometimes do have low magnesium levels, I looked at the list of foods with magnesium in and I appear to eat them..

The only precautionary notices I found were , first consult your GP before taking these supplements , be VERY careful if you have anything wrong with your kidneys and too much magnesium can make IBS D type worse which is what I have.

Thank you for posting this its nice to read of something helping a person and it may be something others could check out with their GPs to see if they have low magnesium levels I hope it continues to help you

Thanks VG for the caution, I do suffer from IBS and have 'trouble going'.....but I'd rather put up with this than to go back to having a body which doesn't seem to work.

Hi Aiden,

Its good to know that it works for you. As far as sleep is concerned I take Amytripteline at around 7pm and have cut that down to just the one now too.

I feel so much better not having all these chemicals in my body and I'm hoping for a brighter future.

Take Care X

Yes I've tried the oil. I rub in into my neck and a jaw befor I go to bed . It definitely makes it feel more relaxed. Epsom salt baths are helpful too especially with a bit of lavender. I've been taking magnesium supplement for a while and it definitely made the sore patches feel better. The physio even commented on this after 1 week of taking them. So probably worth a try

It's certainly worth a try, but as VG says, do check with your GP to make sure that the supplement is OK for you.

If you are taking medication for high blood pressure or heart problems it's especially important to check this out .

Hi Moffy,

It certainly is worth a try and if you're reticent in taking it in tablet form, a bag of spinach shouldn't hurt....

Hope you're keeping well and please do try this.

I do not think this is something I could actually take as at times my IBS gets pretty bad. But if it works for you and your GP okays it then good luck with it xxxxx

My GPs are rubbish when it comes to supplements. One didn't know what 5HTP was, and another couldn't see why I would want to take a Vit B12 supplement (so I came off it, thinking the same, and went really incoherent over the weeks before looking up the symptoms and finding out it could be caused by Vit B12 depletion!!). Magnesium helps me a lot and I am thinking of taking VitD to complement the 5HTP, as suggested in the Fibro newsletter. Now I know vit D can be toxic so will have to have a test at the doctors for levels of it before I supplement - so watch this space, as I bet I am laughed out of the GPs room again.......

in reply toGlenys

Do you happen to know at what level vitamin D is toxic? I'm taking a calcium with D, also Fultium which is prescribed D and also a multivite!

It really is so annoying isn't it? If only they would do a full bit and mineral test at the outset it could save everyone a lot of pain and the NHS a lot of money. Did you have your b12 checked? Or just supplemented to see what happened.

Hi Mooma. I had my vit B12 tested as part of another set of tests and the GP went ape when she saw the levels were through the roof and demanded that I stopped taking the supplement. Within a couple of months, I started with my first ever onslaught of "lost word syndrome" - so I thought I was going mad - only to find out it is a symptom of B12 deficiency - so BACK on them, again :-/

Thank you for all your comments,

I think that we all have to experiment with our own methods because as we know, there is no known cure for FM and when I was first diagnosed with it I needed my GP to help me.

It's only now after a few years of taking hard chemicals that I have decided to try a more holistic approach to my illness.

It has been two or three months now that I have started to get control of my life again, who knows, it could be remission or my method is actually working.

Wish me luck

I take magnesium at night....and use Epson salts in a bath or foot bath. I find it brilliant x Be careful if blood pressure is an issue. It will make it drop. Many fibro people find it beneficial x

What type of magnesium do you take and how much? Thank you

Hi, do you mean magnesium makes blood pressure low! Mine is already fairly low...

I also take magnesium at night as its supposed to help relax muscles. I take my Vit D and calcium in the morning as its not recommended to take magnesium and calcium at the same time. I asked my dr about a test for Vit D and I was told its very expensive, although the test for calcium is much cheaper and if they found a calcium deficiency they would then test for Vit D deficiency!

I'm about to have my blood tested again so if there's anything interesting to report I'll let you all know :)

Thanks for that, I will look out for your post, xxx

My tablets (from boots) are magnesium, calcium and vit d combined

Wow - thank you! I have just order a magnesium supplement and hope it is as effective for me as it has been for you. I like spinach so will buy some today! x
