hi michelle, you might have a pinched nerve in your neck.

but I do drop, fumble and throw things. I also have muscles that twitch, shake or jump.

sandra.

Hi Michelle, funnily enough I spoke to my rheumy about the same problem yesterday. It's a new symptom for me. I also have rheumatoid arthritis as well as fibro and was really worried about this. My rheumy was very dismissive about it and said something about an over active nervous system. He said it was nothing to worry about. It's mainly in my hands and legs, and I understand why your worried, it's unpleasant and scary. I don't have an answer for you but I just wanted to let you know you aren't alone x

Yes i agree with san its worth getting GP to check for a trapped nerve, but I have also read plenty of posts about uncontrollable twitching on here ... I am having a my hands don't belong to me today they refuse to pick up and hold anything I want and have decorated the kitchen with butter ham and bread so far today.... My OH oh so helpfully as we joke about my fibro offered to go and buy me a tippy cup.. I would agree except I would never get the lid off

VG x

Hello kilts,

I personally get Myoclonic jerks all the time as part of my Fibromyalgia but you would need to see a GP for a proper diagnosis. However thought I would mention it out of interest and the link below discusses twitching too

Hope this helps

This is happened to me in the past few weeks! I thought I was the only one, I'll be lying down trying to rest or watch telly and my arms will jump/twitch whatever you want to call it, I can tell you when its going to happen but i cant stop it!! Its so weird, I saw my GP yesterday and told him but he didnt say anything about it so im going back in a few weeks to see someone else. I hope you get a better result :)

Take care

Charlotte xx

It could be, get it checked out with your GP to rule other things out. But above all try not to worry as that will make it all worse. I have all this going on and I hate it when my jaw takes on a life of tits own and wiggles from side to side at great speed all on its own. I have the same problems with the limbs and it often affects my whole body making it look like I am having a fit but wide awake. Get it checked out hunni xxxxx

To the best of my knowledge, twitching to that degree is not a commonly cited characteristic of fibro (however, the symptom list is so long it's bound to be in there somewhere). I do suffer from this, although it is not certain whether the twitches come from a spinal tumor I have causing nerv compression or fibro. In general my doctor would suspect the most likely cause be the spinal tumour, but it's location and the nerves I suffer the jerking in don't add up and so maybe it is the fibro.

Although not usually recomended for the purpose, or often fibro, if you take opiate medications it is worth observing whether the twitching is decreased while you are under the influence of these medications. However, opiates are by no means the first (or a good) medication for tweating the twitching, this observation might just point the doctor in the vage pharmacological direction to head.

NONE OF THE FOLLOWING IS ADVICE IS TO BE ACTED UPON WITHOUT DISCUSSING THESE WITH YOUR DOCTOR. THESE MEDICATIONS WERE HELPFUL FOR ME, BUT MAY BE INAPPROPRIATE FOR PATIENTS DUE TO DIFFERING CIRCUMSTANCES.

My twitches were first treated with a long acting skeletal muscle relaxant known as Orphendrine (brand name Norflex). This is a slow release formula, and as such is taken twice daily to attempt stop the onset of the symptoms. It worked very well for me when I was experience the symptoms for 2 to 3 minutes at a time, once every 2 to 3 hours or so.

However, after a year the twitches increased in severity to being violent in nature and very noticeable despite this medication. I was prescribed diazepam to take as well as the norflex. Diazepam cannot be taken regularly, and thus I only take this medication at the first sign of a violent burst coming on, when I am in a situation where I can't ride it out (i.e. when I'm at work or at a university lecture, taking my wife out to dinner at a nice restraunt etc.) and this works very well.

However, I must re-stress, I mention these treatments only to speak to your doctor about if you wish to attempt to treat these symptoms pharmacologically.

It is also important to remember it may not be fibro, and so as mentioned by other posters, definetly explore other causes. I know off the top of my head that stress can often cause this phenomena. Likewise, this could by a form of hypnagogic jerk. Both these options I would shy away from pharmaceuticals as first line treatments.

Best of luck,

John
