A question for anyone who lives in Wales. Going to a wedding there in June and booked into a Holiday Inn Express and somewhat taken aback to have to choose smoking or non smoking room. Looked up a couple of B&Bs and they mentioned lounges where smoking is allowed. Is the law not the same as for England??

as far as i know living in wales as i do their is no smoking in wales any where but outside ... maybe some places have old web pages ?? but we also need to pay for carryer bags so bring your own xx have a nice time gentle dyslexic hugs
Hotels have designated smoking rooms under exemptions so they can allow smoking rooms in all of the UK according to Google.
I assume this is because foreign visitors to the UK would expect to be able to smoke- but that's just a guess.
Being able to choose smoking or non smoking rooms used to be an option when I worked in travel some time ago. Perhaps it would be best to contact the hotel you are staying in to see what their policy is, as Lexie says, it may be an old website.
Hope you enjoy both the wedding and Wales and hope the sun shines on you. Love Angela xx
hi if i were you i would call the place you are staying inthey will be able to tell you straight away
personally i would have thought it was right as a big company like that would have up to date info on their site ? if it was a family run business a one off place then that may be different but they are a big chain love to you and good luck diddle x
Hubby has booked non-smoking rooms at Holiday Inn Express because they can be cancelled up to the last minute. I am still surprised though - we have stayed at travel lodges, premier inn, and guesthouses in England and Scotland loads of times and smoking has been banned in them all since 2007!
there is no smoking policy throughout Wales and also within so many metres of any hospital site - outside only and no hotel is allowed to have designated smokers rooms. unless the point is to put you near to the designated outside smoking area? and dont forget your shopping bags - you have to pay for all of them here - including paper bags with macdonalds and the like
To quote; "While smokefree legislation will not guarantee that people will get a smokefree hotel room, the regulations require hotel proprietors to specifically designate the hotel rooms that are not smokefree and ensure that hotel rooms for smoking are clearly marked."
Apparently those are the latest guide for hotel owners, so it looks like they can apply to have some rooms exempt from the smoking ban.
Further search on Google and I've found that Holiday Inn Express are one of those hotels that applied for an exemption for some of their rooms , from what I can see it's because they get a lot of visitors from the USA .
