Medication for fibromyalgia

Hi all , hope your day has started well. I wondered if you don’t mind sharing what meds you take for fibromyalgia. Right now I’m on 75 mg nortriptiline and 1 mg of clonazepam but I’m still in pain.

I’ve tried various medications over the last 7 years but most of it was ineffective. Is there anything new that doctors are prescribing nowadays?

Thanks in advance and have a pain free day you all.

I take 50mg Amitriptyline at night, helps me sleep and eases the pain, but it doesn't stop the pain completely. I did take Gabapentin for a while but that did nothing for me at all. I'm also prescribed Co-codamol 30mg/500mg for Osteoarthritis, it also eases the Fibro pain a bit, I don't take the maximum dose and only use it when the pain is really bad. I use a Magnesium spray for Fibro pain in my legs, it really helped a lot when I first started using it, but not so much now. 🙁 I'm never pain free these days, but I can function with the lower pain.

Some things work for some but not all, so it's a case of trial and error until you find something that helps.

Hello, I take 60mg tablet of duloxtene which is supposed too help Fibromaylia patients, I can also use Codiene 30mg x 3 a day but not for long term use. Lately I have used a 400 g tablet of ibuprofen (only 3 in 24 hrs ) that seems too help me , about from the daily duloxtene I try not too take pain killers every day but have days where I rest abit more , differently a soak in the bath every evening , I also found a Cannabi hemp strong cream too rub in lower back , shoulder blades , neck (my troublesome area s ) and brought that online Pharmacist s are helpful and always run anything new you try by them 1st is s must). Wishing you my best xx

Hiya 👋 it seems to me that treating fibromyalgia pain is like a moving target 😫. I've not successfully found anything and I find the side affects on what I have tried are just not worth it 😕. I hope other people have a better response for you 🤞. Take good care x

Hi, I have prescriptions for Tapentadol SR 50 mg which I take morning and evening. Then I have Tapentadol 50mg and 75 mg for breakthrough pain. I also have cocodamol 30/500. I don’t take the latter everyday as it can cause constipation. Was on duloxetine years ago and it made me feel peculiar. I also have osteoarthritis in my spine. I originally started out on just ibuprofen and lower level of cocodamol (8/500 and 15/500) but they stopped working. You could also ask your GP about Celebrex.

Hi VintageMustard

I take cocodamol but they stop working. I remember trying tapentadol but unfortunately it didn’t work. I’ve tried so many opioids but none of them touched my pain. Naproxen is what I’m currently taking. That’s similar to Celebrex.

What dosage(s) of tapentadol did you take/try? What other opiods did you try? Are you with a pain clinic?

I can’t remember because it was a few years ago. I know I tried buprenorphine patch as well but no luck. Yes I’m with a pain clinic

Do those patches come in tablet form? I’ve use amitryptiline in the past but it had a terrible hangover effect on me even at low doses. I also tried Tramadol in the past but it didn’t work.

Have you tried Gabapentin or Pregabalin? I think Pregabalin is newer than Gabapentin. When my problems first started, I had a lot of neuropathic pain and tried both of these as then GP prescribed them. They made me very very sleepy and when I wasn’t sleeping I wanted to eat constantly. I gained a lot of weight, which I did manage to lose eventually. Another doctor told me later that I should have been started on a much smaller dose. I have not returned to either of them.

Yes I’ve tried both. Gabapentin didn’t work but pregabalin was great. I will start it again hoping it will help me.

Wow, that’s something. Did you get them from pain clinic? My GP would never give me that much medication, especially the fentanyl patch.

morag37 profile image
morag37 in reply toEntela15

It was all from GP. In fairness have been going through a really rough patch with Fibro...like we all do so gabapentin was doubled....so will not take it if i feel i don't need it. been on patches at least 8 years...even with all that it sometimes doesn't touch the pain.

Had me on Tramadol in the early years, which i liked, but had to come of as it gave me BPPV.

Hi, I take tramadol, but I limit them to 4 x50mg a day. I’m prescribed up to 6 a day. I supplement that with ibuprofen. I would love to be prescribed Clonazepam as I find the tramadol activating and can’t take it close to bed time. I have RLS, ME and anxiety disorder and was prescribed diazepam at night but doc made me stop taking it when I went on Tramadol.

May I ask how you got prescribed clonazepam? I am so stiff, almost rigid in my shoulders, neck and legs, I really need something to help with muscle relaxation and sleep.

Ps. Have taken nearly every antidepressant going, including amitryptaline and duloxetine, they have all caused terrible side effects.

Hi Pixie

I was prescribed clonazepam a very long time ago by a neurologist to help with my anxiety and depression. I have been taking it for over ten years.

It helps as a pain killer and muscle relaxant but the longer you use it the less you feel the benefit.

I remember trying tramadol years ago but it didn’t touch my pain. Xx

Hi Entela15,

Put your reading glasses on glasses Chuck,

Amitriptyline x2 100 at bedtime (still can't get to sleep sometimes until 5am)

Atorvastatin 20mg at bedtime,

Clopidogrel 1 75mg in the morning

Dihdrocodeine 60mg x2 modified release

Fluoxetine 20mgx3 morning

Lanzoprazole 30mg morning

Levothyroxine 100mg

Last but not least

Tramadole 50mg x8 through out the day

Still not pain free 🤬

Take care

Debs

Does the tramadol work? Doesn’t work for me 😥

I don’t think it works that well for pain, (better if you combine it with paracetamol or ibuprofen) but I do find it has a mild anti depressant effect. Tramadol is a weak opiate agonist and also an SNRI, similar to venlafaxine (which I can’t tolerate at all 🤷‍♀️) it is the only thing I have been able to tolerate for depression. If you look on drugs. com it has tons of positive reviews for depression- weird drug and seems to work very differently on people. I think it’s something to do with having a certain gene, a lot of people haven’t got it, so it does nothing for them x

I used to tolerate venlafaxine but not anymore. It made me ill last time I tried to take it.

Hi Entela, Help from my gp? Zero, zilch, Nada, nothing 😤

I was told that a lot of gps think it's a mental health issue. If so, I want to know why I've not been referred 4 mental health help 😒

I already take Gabapentin abd Zomorph for Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, a compressed spine, etc.

After researching and trying loads of different medication I've started taking Magnesium 6-in1 Complex. It's £15 for 120 tablets but the dose is x3 tablets per day and equals 40 doses. My current gp, who dismisses me about my Fibromyalgia which was diagnosed by a professor, states that the NHS doesn't prescribe Magnesium medication 😤 It's stopped my inability to move my back from the waist up and I've had less flare ups since using it 2 months ago. It takes the edge off the pain which is the most I've ever had. Side effect though is poor sleeping pattern.

My brother has sent me Boron to try. It's Sodium Borate at 10mg. It's a dose of 2 tablets daily. This contains 180 tablets so is cheaper at 3 months supply in each bottle.

Hope this helps. All the best 😍
