Yes I’ve been diagnosed with gerd and post nasal drip. It was giving me acid reflux and also irritating my oesophagus, making me cough all the time.

I have omoperazole to help with hers and a nasal spray for the “drip”.

These appear to have calmed the constant cough but not irradiated it altogether.

I hope you find some treatment to help with your gerd symptoms soon.

I suffer terrible with heartburn and burning in my tummy when I eat; I have a history of having ulcers. I use omeprazol but also gaviscon advance both from GP! I can use a bottle a week of Gaviscon. I have to keep it by the bed. I try to avoid food and drinks I know will make it worse but literally got to the stage anything I eat affects it and if I don’t eat that makes it worse! Gaviscon does help!

I am sorry you are suffering! Kindest regards Braveheart x

Hi, also suffer from Acid reflux. Have you ever been tested and treated for helicobacter pylori ?

This is often associated with ulcers so worth asking your GO to check.

Once treated you may find an improvement in your symptoms.

I have but it was thought to be medication and not pylori 🤷🏻‍♀️

I too have been prescribed Gaviscon which is very soothing to my oesophagus and stomach and gut. I had to stop taking the Omeprazole and Lansoprazole because after taking it for so many years, the gastroenterologist suggested I cut it out as the stomach does need some acid to digest the food. But with those proton pump inhibitors meds, it was no longer safe for me to continue long term.

Wishing everyone in this group joy & peace. Enjoy your weekend, 🦋

Good morning Fizzled

I saw my Dr the other day as my voice has been going hoarse or disappearing completely on & off for about 9months.

Kept thinking it was a throat virus or chest infection, but after x-Ray on chest was clear my Dr said it’s reflux laryngitis. He gave me antibiotics for the current infection in my throat caused from the acid & then Gaviscon to help reduce the acid in my stomach.

Waiting for an ENT appointment to come through for it too.

Rarely suffered acid reflux in my life until menopause, then got very sensitive with certain foods triggering it, but never experienced this reflux laryngitis until 9mths ago.

I’m currently sounding like Wheezy off Toy Story🤣

My kids think it’s hilarious!

It’s exhausting not having a voice & straining to be heard though.

As if Fibromyalgia isn’t enough to cope with eh🥴

Do you lose your voice or go hoarse?

Have you tried anything for the relux?

Double Malibu

I can totally relate to the hoarse voice and never being sure if there's actually going to be anything coming out when you try to speak! My voice volume seems very low even when it's ok (ish), I feel like I'm shouting to be heard. It is exhausting 😕

I've had this for years now. Had camera down through the nose, all fine. Upper GI Endoscopy showed Gastritis and a previous ulcer now healed. Gallbladder removed last year.

My nose, mouth & throat are so dry all the time too. Fibro, meds? 🤔

DoubleMalibu profile image
DoubleMalibu in reply to CheetieCat

Hi CheetieCat

I personally don’t take any meds for fibromyalgia.

My mum had dry mouth with her cancer meds and got Salivix pastilles on prescription. She said they worked really well.

Just glad Dr gave my 9mths of voice coming & going a diagnosis. Interesting you had a camera down nose, as Dr said ENT will probably do that with me!

Sorry you been through a lot with Gallbladder removal & ulcer. Good it’s healed now though😊

Best wishes to you

CheetieCat in reply to DoubleMalibu

Yes it was the first thing they did when my voice was going hoarse. They were aware of the acid reflux but didn't seem to be an issue?

Have tried the Salivix pastilles, the spray 🤮, the gel, toothpaste, mouthwashes ..... 😕

Hope all goes well for you 😊

Hi it's my first time posting but your post sounds exactly what happened to me .In 2017 I had several illnesses gp said all viral when I get I'll I always come out in a rash too .I was told I had laryngitis too .At my brothers speech therapy appointment (he was having treatment for throat cancer) The speech therapist told me I need to see a gp there was something wrong with my voice .I did and I had a nasal scope and they diagnosed GERD I didn't accept it as I never suffered with heartburn .But I was told it was happening at night .Put on proton pump tablets (tried a few different ones over the years ).Had to have speech therapy because voice got worse ,They wrote a letter to GP to put me on Gaviscon Advanced .It got better for a while gp took me off gaviscon put on peptic off proton pump .Short story lockdown struck I got worse and toward the end felt I needed to return to gp as voice really bad again .Put back on proton pump speech therapy gaviscon advanced .Had another nasal scope no damage to larynx !!!

I had lost weight didn't like eating or cooking nauseous all the time ,generally feeling unwell and constantly feeling like something blocked in my throat and bringing food up, on top of my voice sounding so bad it was hard for people to understand me .With all my fybromaliga symptoms too I was feeling quite ill.

Because of cancer /MS history in my family and no damage to voice box I had other test thankfully ok but I do have to now be monitored as they found cell changes in my stomach which are more predisposed to becoming cancerous .

I'm still awaiting results for other tests on ph and how I have difficulty swallowing but the moral of my long post is take GERD seriously even if you don't think you have it !!

Prop your bed head up a few inches

Keep a food / symptom diary I use symptom tracker by Adam C (apple) it's fantastic

Have couple pillows sleep on left side

Don't eat drink late at night

Ask for speech therapy if it persists

Ask for further tests if it persists

Demand Gaviscon Advanced (if you can get it there's a shortage at moment (another story😫😫Peptics fine but if your voice is affected you need this !!!!!

It is exhausting I agree and it affects so much of your life I no longer like using the telephone and going out socially .I hope you get it sorted at least you have an ENT appointment !! Oh and going by your name if you like a drink as do I (mine would be Captain Morgan) mine gets much worse when I drink !

DoubleMalibu in reply to Noonarnoonoo

Good Morning Noonarnoonoo!

That’s quite a long profile name😅

Many thanks for your reply, I have noted all your tips and recommendations and will look into things.

Waiting for ENT appointment now.

Dr gave me aniseed Gaviscon, so once I’ve finished the antibiotics for the Laryngitis I’ll start it all. Antibiotics are giving me tummy pains and making my taste like metal! Running out of hours in the day to fit all these meds in😃with my usual ones!

It sounds like you have endured quite a lot & done your best to help yourself.

I hope things have settled down for you.

Oh the ‘double Malibu’ was my cheeky tipple but rarely able to enjoy one now, as it impacts my M.E and fibro 🥴

My best wishes to you😊

Noonarnoonoo in reply to DoubleMalibu

Thanks for your reply name is a combination of 2 Nick names .😂

You know what it's like when the one you pick is already used !

Hopefully gaviscon advanced will really help (I only got 1 bottle this month usually 3 )as shortage of gaviscon at moment ,so advise don't leave it till last min to re order on repeat prescription !!

Hope you feel better soon

I always find taking a pre/probiotic after antibiotics help reset the good gut bacteria

Thanks for the tip re prescription & shortage of Gaviscon 👍🏻

Oh heck picking names online🙈original choices & 2nd 3rd & 4th always in use too😁

Take much care😊

Hi yes I have gerd and a hiatus hernia, I have to take lansoprazole everyday, if I miss a day I know about it. I have to avoid spicy and acidic foods and fatty foods. It can get you down as the heartburns up to your throat.

I also get laryngitis a lot and lose my voice completely.

Sending hugs 🤗

Hello I had reflux due to IBS (tested at hospital for everything). It was under control before I had Fibromyalgia and started taking Nortriptyline. Which set off my reflux badly again, I'm not sure it's great for my general IBS either; but I can't take anything else. It also set off my hot flushes (post Menopause) , which were down to one brief one a day.

Wonderwall3 profile image
Wonderwall3 in reply to BlueTofu

You are describing me! Chronic constipation dominant IBS, acid reflux and severe nerve pain throughout my GI tract. Just started getting hot flushes although I haven't had a period since 2019. All medication has side effects, particularly opiates which cause or worsen constipation. Pregabalin and amitriptyline also. That's why I have to be absolutely desperate to resort to Oramorph, but cannot sleep without amitryptiline.

Hi Fizzled,

I was once told by my midwife, It was heart burn and it meant the baby must have a lot of hair, (old wives tale??) That's over 25 years ago when I was expecting my last child,

Hmmm what is it now then? I seat up bolt right thinking I'm going to vomit fire, Nothing like when pregnant,Myself and Hubby will get through about 3 bottles of gaviscon and a couple of packets of extra strong mints, every month. Iv'e never known anything like it and we are both on laprosozol (sorry cant spell)as well,We have delivery of meds and it sounds like the milkman's coming 😀

I have already got problems with my asparagus, After my gastric band surgury I really cant vomit so the acid rests for a while and I think I'm dying (killed by old vomit was not the way I planned on going) Talk to your doc or phamsey they will be able to advice.(the band didn't work and my consultant apparently is thinking what to try next,I told him I have a very sweet tooth if I can stop or even cut down would see the difference)

It's just another crappy thing to add to the list, When anything crops up try at least get a call back from the doctors, It's new to you and your worried that's a doctors chat by any bodies money, Try not to get stressed out,(yeah I know easier said than done) It just makes things worse, I hope you can get the right advice and move forward,Take care

Just a thought. When I was referred to a Ear, Nose and Throat surgeon because of a persistently sore throat he said therr was nothing wrong with my actual throat but I had severe acid reflux and should be prescribed lansaprazole. He also asked me if I sucked mints and yes they were my favourites and he told me not to have them anymore as they relaxed the valve that keeps acid from rising into the throat making symptoms worse. He also told me to always have the aniseed version of Gaviscon rather than the mint. That is causing me a problem at the moment as none of the chemist's around here seem to be able to get the aniseed version. Perhaps try dropping off anything mint for a bit and see if it helps as it certainly helped me.x

Hi, I have a stomach ulcer and have to be on tablets for the rest of my life, last night I woke up choking on acid because I had forgotten to take my tablet and it's vile isn't it. Are you aware that a lot of inflammation medication can irritate your stomach ? Perhaps make an appointment with your gp and see what they say. Xxx

Hi Fizzled, I have acid reflux and my mouth is constantly filled with patches of small ulcers and sores. I didn't have the acid coming up but it was diagnosed after vomiting every time I ate anything, which lasted for 6 weeks. I was scared to eat and I got oesophogitis because of it, which is inflammation of the oesophagus.

I was sent for an endoscopy which showed the inflammation and biopsies were taken which showed acid reflux.

I am taking Pantaprazole and gaviscon extra and these have been helpful for me. I hope you get some relief. I don't understand this illness we call fibromyalgia. Take care xx

Hi Fizzled. I don't think I have this as badly as anyone else here has written about. I got my GERD kicking in just as covid was beginning to travel. I had given myself a hernia from moving stones in the garden like an idiot and also we were eating a lot of spicy food so I found myself entering the wind tunnel!!! Eeee! - Tried lying at an angle in bed with head raised. It helped quite a bit along with Rennies at first. Lying on left side too with pillow between knees sometimes helps but rarely right side as that crushes your stomach and makes it worse. - Sometimes it wakes me very early and I have resorted to taking one or two Buscopan - Hyosine bromide - which mostly helps with calming it all down and getting me off to sleep for a bit longer in the small hours. It would be essential to consult with Doc about this while taking other drugs. (I tried it because I don'r use pharma much and my daughter in law's has gained knowledge from her nutritionist. Now have started taking something else called Daosin she suggested. She is prescribed but I get mine from Amazon). Have tried it before and now gone back to it. Is useful against histamine reactions and I get those lots. -Who really knows what is going on in our guts, I wonder!? Thanks for posting this because I am now motivated to see if I can improve my gut with suitable probiotics and returning to a Monash University inspired Low Fodmaps diet which does help.

Not easy for anyone now with food prices so high but doable as the portions are smaller. One good thing about having GERD is that I have lost a serious amount of weight over three years which is helping other issues. Another good thing is that my son has introduced me to 'the heat-pad on the stomach'. This is for his migraines. Mine is for stomach and gut pain, and as I've recently had blood tests for everything that were all clear, I've decided to use my hot water bottle. Liking that a lot as it seems to help and anyway it's suddenly getting cold. Hope you find the thing that really helps.

Have you been checked for Hiatus Hernia? Where your stomach sphincter has failed and a small bit of your stomach peeps through. It’s not fatal or anything, but it’s worth asking for an investigation. Unpleasant, and I know how you feel. 🙂The pharmacist will advise you as to what reflux treatment is best. Hope you get relief soon.

Hi Fizzled,

Stomach sensitisation is yet another potential symptom for us Fibro warriors to contend with. My GERD is so severe there are very few foods that don’t make me violently sick or up all night feeling sick and really ill. I have omeprazole & famotidine which keep everything under control so long as I micro manage my diet.

I wish you luck finding what works for you & identifying your biggest problem foods.

Best wishes. Bm

It may be worth checking to see if you’re gluten intolerant. No doctors will tell you about this but you can buy a diy kit. No harm in checking

Hi there, I was always getting hoarse and have the nasal drip which is embarrassing as just comes from nowhere when talking to someone. Had a camera put up nose and down throat and GERD was diagnosed. I take Lansoprazole and raise my head more than my body when sleeping. I have had Fibro for 33 years, it comes with so many symptoms. Always best to get proper tests for anything going on with your throat or stomach. Take care.
