I seriously don’t know how to get rid of this pain, it’s pushing down on my bladder, which is sending it into spasms. Any advice would really appreciate.

I hope you are all having a better night , healing hugs 🤗.

To be honest I can't help but I can sympathise. I have Bladder Pain Syndrome which triggers and is triggered by IBS. I've been waking up every hour hour at night to wee, it's exhausting! I've tried to go on a stricter fodmap diet so at least the IBS is less likely to trigger my bladder but I can't stop it if it's the other way round.....

morning Cat00 , thank you .

I know I came on for advice, but there is something you can do about the frequency of peeing, 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder with water, it taste disgusting, but it calms any acidity in the bladder and stops you going too often, but it doesn’t stop the spasms.

I feel for you too, it’s a never ending cycle. I hope yours eases soon.

Sadly I've tried the baking soda thing and it didn't make any difference. This has been going on for years so I've run through most options now. 🙄

Blue-52 in reply to Cat00

ahh, shame, have you had the flexi tube scan? Just to see if there is anything else going on, mine came back normal. It’s just another blinking thing we have to put up with. I bet you are exhausted.

I had an endoscopy when I was in my early 20s which showed I had a "very efficient bladder" but that was 25 years ago....I am incredibly tired, I'm up every hour. I've actually just written a letter to my doctors bc I have social phobia, which is particularly pronounced with doctors, bc the more ill I get the harder I find it to call the surgery. I'm basically begging them for a referral, so I guess I've have to see what happens, I emailed but they didn't reply so I've put a stamp on this one!

bless you, I hope this time you get a call.

I do sympathise I have this too and like you dont like speaking to the doctor and at th moment I am trying different berries like Pomegranite, Blueberries etc.. will let you know if I find anything that helps it's exhausting xx

Cat00 profile image
Cat00 in reply to Pat9

Yes do let us know if it helps! I know the classic suggestion of Cranberries often makes it worse sadly. I'm on the third drug now but they only seem to help for a month and only after I've been on them over a month and then they all stop working.

The latest thing I've been trying are Digestive Bitters they are disgusting but do seem to help with my digestion but it's too early to say at the moment. And again that only helps IBS not the BPS.

Blue-52 profile image
Blue-52 in reply to Cat00

my doctor told me to stay away from cranberries, she said it makes it worse, and it does.

What is digestive bitters?

Cat00 profile image
Cat00 in reply to Blue-52

Digestive Bitters are for people who may have problems digesting food for various reasons like low stomach acid. They are herbal concoctions that taste horrible in order to provoke a digestive response, like salivation. They try to get your digestive juices flowing before your food hits your stomach. They come with the usual positive anecdotal reviews but with little to no scientific evidence for their efficacy.

You can do a bicarbonate of soda "test" to see if you have low stomach acid. If you don't burp very quickly after ingesting bicarbonate of soda the suggestion is you have low stomach acid, I didn't burp at all. All of this again is anecdotal and you can find arguments for and against on the Internet. I am sufficiently desperate I'm trying it anyway!

Blue-52 profile image
Blue-52 in reply to Cat00

well that’s a new one for me, I don’t think it would help me, as I produce too much acid, and have to take esomaprazole.

I hope you find it works for you, we do get desperate and try everything, even if it is disgusting to eat.

Cat00 profile image
Cat00 in reply to Blue-52

My friend is the same, he has apple cider vinegar in the morning. Apparently Bitters can help with reflux if taken after food, but obviously that's just what I read, I have no experience of them being used that way.

Blue-52 profile image
Blue-52 in reply to Cat00

Thanks for that, I will check it out and see what it says. I will look 👀 j into the Apple vinegar.

it is a nightmare that's for sure can't remember the last night I slept right round without needing to empty my bladder every 5 minutes it's so draining xx

Have you tried the D- Mannose supplement with Cranberry extract.Unlike the juice which is packed with sugars that make everything worse , the supplement just has the two active ingredients that help the bladder.

I usually take it through Autumn and Winter because I'm prone to getting kidney and bladder infections and irritation at this time of year.

I seem to swell out and go non stop when I have an infection.

It does seem to reduce the infections and time a flare in my bladder occurs.

I find the Buscopan I take for the IBS helps with the pain and spasms. I also have electrolyte salt sachets three times a week as my levels change a lot.

Do you usually need to go so frequently with your BPS , or do you think you could have a salt imbalance or infection going on?

Might be an idea to ring the surgery , or ask someone to do it for you , and see if you could just drop in ( or get someone else to drop off) a urine sample to have your urinalysis done. Better safe than sorry , as they say . It could help and it would hopefully make you feel less anxious if you aren't having to do an appointment.

Take care , Bee

Blue-52 in reply to Blearyeyed

hey bee, thank you for your help, I really don’t know if D mannose would help, cranberry makes my situation worse, but you say it’s less sugar, I am lactose intolerance and sugar intolerance and artificial sweetness, I’m a nightmare lol.

Buscopan is a no no for me, but w don’t seem to get any infections.

As for going so much, I can just drink water and boom, my ibs is amazing how it has a mind of its own, sometimes I just give up with food, not that I eat much, so it’s a wonder where it comes from.

I do have home kits for renal, as my husband is a transplant patient he has to do regular ones, so they allow me to use them to.

Hi

I have had Fibromyalgia since 1994

I had episodes of what I thought was Irritable bladder and did not really treat it but put up with it.

By accident when an abdominal ultrasound was performed for stomach pain it was discovered that I had a bladder tumour the size of a golf ball

I have Transitional cell bladder Cancer treated with reoccurrence since 2014

I would suggest that you get a urology referral and have a cystoscopy performed to see if you have interstial cystitis or ???

They will help you to get relief from your symptoms

Good luck

Blue-52 profile image
Blue-52 in reply to Adohr

Thank you, I am sorry you had to go through this, I have had all of what you have suggested. and also a flexi scan, which you have to be sedated for, mini op, all came back normal, I also don’t have intersistial cystitis, I’m just unlucky to have CFS that is affecting all of my internal muscles and is affecting waste muscles .

Long shot ... tonic water? It has quinine in it (not sugar free as contains nasties). Doc gives me quinine for when upper thighs go into spasm. Not to be taken all the time. I just know some people get vaginal cramps too. Hope you get the help you need soon.

Blue-52 profile image
Blue-52 in reply to KimiJay

ahh that’s a thought, tonic water, but not sure if the fizziness would cause a problem? I can only but try, thank you.

glad your brain is working lol, cos mines certainly not. Thank you.

KimiJay profile image
KimiJay in reply to Blue-52

Lol! My husband and son may not agree with you about the brain working. It is still good enough for me to mostly do the cooking though, often with the aid of a wheeled office chair in the kitchen, but that also causes leg cramps if I overdo it. ps If I haven't been eating as much - as in fasting until midday - so there may be two or even three nights when my body is getting rid of excess fluid. I wear a thick tenor lady at night and it gives me a tiddly bit of extra confidence to relax. - Comment below about a urine sample by Yassytina has just reminded me that you can also get strips to home test the acidity or alkalinity of urine. You can test saliva too I found out recently after several years of not reading all of the lable! - Happy dreams though. Quite a while since I've dreamed of being in a place where I am looking for a loo and either there isn't one or there are too many people around. Evidently, lots of people get those.

Blue-52 profile image
Blue-52 in reply to KimiJay

lol, I get what you mean, mine look at me sometimes as f I’m speaking in another language ha ha.

Sadly I can’t cook anymore, unless they want a dinner on the floor. I don’t get out much , but I went on the bladder website, you can get a key for any public toilet, also a card that you can show to any pub retailers that you have a bladder problem, just incase your dream comes true, my husband is a transplant patient and since getting his new kidney he pees more so I got it for him, I am glad you get some relief with the tenor x

I have all the test strips for all sorts, as hub has to do his for clinic . I hope you get some relief tonight.

KimiJay profile image
KimiJay in reply to Blue-52

Ah! I have a key which I got from Amazon but it is not a radio one. Good idea to get one of those and a shop thingy. Haven't seen my doc for well over two years. I'll ask her about that when I next see her. Am mostly ok. I think it's the cold making it worse. Pellet boiler packed up so most of the house is a little bit cold - You are well ahead of me on the urine testing and kidney knowledge. My hubs has had one kidney stone shattered but another one to go. A transplant is very dramatic. Sounds like it was very successful but must have been a stressful time for you. Best of health to all.

Blue-52 profile image
Blue-52 in reply to KimiJay

kidney stones are painful, especially if one decides to try and pass, my husband had multiple stones before transplant, he had the lithotripter to , to blast them, I hope it works for your hubs.

Best of health to you all too, thank you.

KimiJay profile image
KimiJay in reply to Blue-52

Thank you so much. We have probably one of the best hospitals in the UK. Gives him a good chance. Multiple stones must have been unbearable.

Blue-52 profile image
Blue-52 in reply to KimiJay

great, but it must be hard for him to pass them, such tiny pieces when they are broken down, but cause so much pain.

Hubs had a high calcium level due to double kidney failure, so it was very painful for him. By T we are 7 years in with a live donor and all is good.

KimiJay profile image
KimiJay in reply to Blue-52

How wonderful! I had to google to see what it really involved. Very heartwarming. There are some wonderful people in the world. I read that the single kidney grows in size to manage the extra work - My hubs went on a village walk Monday and told me his p.. was red when he came back. He didn't seem particularly worried though and he's got another appointment soon. Has happily gone off to choir tonight in the local town. Three stents in his heart recently has enabled that too. There are miracles about. It maybe needs just one key to unlock the breakthrough all of us need to get our lives back up to a more bearable level.

Blue-52 profile image
Blue-52 in reply to KimiJay

there certainly are miraculous people out there, on his 1st attempt, he was opened up, kidney sitting there, and generally they put the kidney in your side, for easy access, but his veins stopped too hi up, no body knew this so after 7 hours it was aborted,? So in some ways he is lucky as he has his kidney higher up behind the rib cage, much like us, but he is left with A lot of scarring, he’s proud of them lol. Yes the kidney does grow.

When you have lithotripsy it can make your hubs pee red, you can imagine the kidney is getting blasted and the good news is the stone is breaking up, as it is scratching the sides and bladder, bless him .

KimiJay profile image
KimiJay in reply to Blue-52

Thank you. He has more lithotripsy to come and now I know the name of the treatment.

Blue-52 profile image
Blue-52 in reply to KimiJay

you are very welcome, I hope it’s all plain sailing for him.

Blue-52 profile image

Thank you.

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyed in reply to Blue-52

Unfortunately, most tonic waters , even the good ones , either don't contain actual quinine , or no longer have enough in them to be medically significant anymore. I find the Buscopan I am prescribed for my IBS also helps the bladder spasms . My Pregbalin for the Fibro also seems to help.

Kegle exercises , which are specific for women or men , are good at retraining the bladder and bowel muscles. You can download a PDF from NHS direct , just put Kegle , or Bladder exercises into the search engine. You just do a few now and then through the day while doing something else.

Hope it improves soon , Bee

I tried taking buscopan in the small hours this morning. I think it may have helped my bladder too. Not what I usually take it for but it has seemed to help. Thanks.

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyed in reply to KimiJay

The effect should improve too if you take it over a couple of weeks. I take it usually for my IBS but I have found if a prescription is late my bladder pain and spasms are worse not just my stomach. Glad it seemed to help . Take care , Bee

KimiJay profile image
KimiJay in reply to Blearyeyed

My daughter in law and I both gave it up as it made us feel more tired. All I can think of else for spasms is acupuncture or its companion dry needling but maybe not in that area. Hubs and I have hot water bottles but they don't always get me off to sleep again. Anyway, I shall look forward to how I feel in a couple of weeks on them at night.
