Hi, any sort of trauma/stress can act as a trigger for fibromyalgia

Long time ago I had glandular fever, after that I never felt right, still could run a marathon and work three jobs (4 if you include the family and DIY).I slowly decayed until I am in the state I am in now but there was one day I went to the doctors and said I can not function anymore, really it was I said what was happening, but that was what it amounted to.Along the way I've had three serious car accidents (none my fault) and 4 serious operations (not connected to the car accidents) all of which I did not deal with the anaesthetic well.

So what really made me end up here is anybody's guess.

Other people have told me stories of serious family trauma setting it off, accidents, operations, physical assaults (rape) and a host of others 'triggers'. It is almost as if, if you can not do anything about the event, your body attacks itself.

Look after yourself, sorry you have joined the party.

Hi there,Yes I had a very traumatic birth almost 6 years ago. Male midwife wouldn't allow me pain relief as baby's head was down, they could touch it, I was pushing and pushing, for over 2 hours, nothing was happening, this was at 1530, I screamed for pain relief, reluctantly got injection that took edge off but within half hour wore off, at 1615 asking why my baby wasn't coming out, she was stuck, really!! I asked for a Dr to come and see me as I was still pushing away, male midwife said, no you can't see a Dr until 10pm!?!? Eh! So this was how it was for 5 hours, I was pushing, she kept going back up, baby was fine in all of this but I thought was going to die as they wouldn't let me have anything else but gas and air. So 10pm came and I screamed, get me the Dr, midwife tried to fob me off but I made it very clear not to. Dr came at 1006, I was in theatre at 1010 as emergency, Dr wasn't very happy and I got an instant epidural and baby came out by forceps, she just needed her head turned very slightly, wasn't a good experience at all and he don't work there anymore!!

Once I got home, I wasn't able to go out for walks with new pram, couldn't stand to wash her bottles, was just very tired and flu feeling all the time, my GP is the best and he saw me every week for 6 weeks and kept saying, I don't know why but I don't feel well. He then said I think youve got fybro from the bad birth, it's like your head/brain has had too much to cope with so it shuts down on us to try and repair itself, I've not been same since and over time it gets slightly worse but I try and not dwell on it but I get angry thinking about it and the male midwife! I wouldn't want to ever see him again. It's also stopped me having another baby, which makes me and family sad. I remember asking to let me die whilst in labour. One midwife came to my bed after on the ward and asked me if I was ok now, she had heard everything and tried to intervine but midwife's have this thing about not handing cases over to Dr or consultants, it's shocking but they won't be doing that again! X x

If I were young enough to have children I would never let any kind of male medic near me. Some years ago I went into hospital with miscarriage symptoms (early pregnancy) and the young doctor who came to see me said "I need to examine you to make sure you are pregnant" I told him I had tested positive and that I didn't think it would help stop me miscarrying but he insisted. He shoved his fingers into me and when I cried out in pain he said "It doesn't hurt". How the hell would he know? All women are definitely not the same.
