hi. I’ve put a load of weight on with no difference in my eating / exercises (or lack of)

i’m on Pregablin and Amitrypteline. I’ve been taking myself off the pregablin but don’t see much difference so I’m wondering....how many people who’ve been prescribed amitrypteline have put a lot of weight on ?

It’s making me miserable, I was heavy to start with but the extra 10kg is a nightmare 😱😢

Hi Ellenlow,

I am on both I was told by my consultant that Amitriptyline does cause weight gain and it is a known that Pregabalin does, there really is no simple answer, I watch my weight eat healthy and always work on a calorie deficit but the weight is making a come back, I was told that the only answer was to cut these drugs out but this is a solid NO as I did try and the pain came back. The Amitriptyline I have to take otherwise I do not sleep and am kept awake with muscle spasms and twitches also the Pregabalin helps with the face pain, I also take Duloxetine too, I am hoping to increase the Duloxetine and decrease the Pregabalin.

Hi,

I am on amitriptyline 90mg now and I was on Pregablin. Pregablin took me from anorexic to overweight in 6 months. I weaned myself off it and wouldn't take it again for that reason, it made me insatiable in relation to food.

Now with the Amitriptyline I'm a little fatter than I want to be but technically not overweight. I go to the gym and do 5 days fasts once a month. It's really helped me not put on more weight during lockdown but I have chronic migraines and fasting can make that worse so I can't always do it. I tried many diets non of which made any difference. I think with chronic pain and IBS it's very hard to not resort to carbs!

I did read amytriptylene gains weight.am bit paranoid with weight gain so came off it and to honest it didn’t help just drugged me so I couldn’t get up.Been on pregabalin about 9 years .I can’t say it has put weight on but everyone’s metabolism is different.I must say at first it did make me want more and hunt round cupboards for something but I try not to but do have sweet tooth at times. All this staying in doesn’t help thou.itching to get out.my feet have been infected badly so waiting for them to heal then will get some freedom.Merry Xmas

I gained about 2 stone when I was on amitriptyline and I was already overweight. It didn’t do much for me anyway so I stopped it (after 4 attempts) and eventually lost the weight I had gained.

Hello I can understand what you're going through because when I was first told I had fibromyia I was given pregablin. It didn't help with the fibromyia pain. I did put on a lot of weight. I didn't change anything in my eating habits. It was the pregablin. I spoke with my doctor he changed them to gabapentin they did exactly the same thing. I spoke to loads of other people and they all said that they had also put weight on when they were talking those meds. Amitriptyline are pretty good for fibromyia I have been on them for many years. I take them at night.Ask your doctor to give you Zomorph they are a small capsule taken twice a day. One in the morning and one 12 hours later at night. They are a slow release tablet and they do work. I hope you find something that works for you. Take care of yourself

Hi there,

I definitely put on weight whilst on Amitriptyline - and it came off pretty quickly by itself when I stopped taking that medication. I was shocked when I took a medication called Duloxetine (Cymbalta), I seriously put on around 10kgs in 2 months and I have been naturally slim my whole life except for the Amitriptyline stint. I tried everything I could think of to shift the weight with little success until I came across a book called The Serotonin Power Diet. The diet is a little counterintuitive as you actually eat carbs! But it has been the ONLY thing that has worked for me and has slowly but surely taken 8kg off. It is American and you have to be exact in your ratio's of carbohydrates/fats etc, but it worked. I believe they are coming out with a revised addition soon as it is a little old. I hope this helps...
