Can anyone recommend an orthopedic pillow?

Hi all, I'm new here, it's great to find such a supportive forum.

I have fibro/cfs and suffer with neck and shoulder pain. When they knot up, I get cluster migraines. I don't think my feather pillow is helping, as I wake every morning with a stiff neck and the shoulder I lay on is stiff and sore. Considering the prices of some orthopedic pillows out there, I'd be grateful if anyone could recommend one?

I also have a lots of problems with my shoulders and neck partly bc I'm a front/side sleeper. I went to john lewis and bought a front sleepers pillow for £25. They had lots of different types but were very expensive getting to over £100 for some of them. Im not sure it helps much though so im currently trying to learn to sleep on my back. But given I'm an insomniac who always slept on their front bc my back hurts and its warmer, darker, quieter sleeping on my front I think it may take a long time!

Thank you, Cat00. I'll look them up, too. It must be so rough being an insomniac, it makes everything so much worse when you can't get a good night's sleep.

Hi Norah,

The last 3 years I've tried more than 20 pillows. Luckily most of them were from Amazon with free return 😁. First of all, the word orthopedic is purely a marketing term. There is no legal definition and as a result anyone can stick this word to a mattress or pillow regardless of the quality.

Now for the recommendation. I'm a side sleeper and until last year I used to use a quite high latex pillow. This year I switched to a relatively low memory foam one and I got rid of a lot of neck tightness. The last couple weeks I've been trying to find an even lower one that suits me and I've seen even more improvement.

Unfortunately, the pillow is such a personal matter and I cannot recommend anything.

Good luck

Hi aytias, Actually, your reply is very helpful, thank you. You're the second person to suggest a memory foam one, and I think I'll try that, and not be drawn in by the 'orthopedic' marketing (which I didn't realise they were doing). It's got to be a cheaper option, too - I just couldn't bring myself to pay upwards of £50 to try one of the 'Orthopedic' ones, so glad I asked first!

Hi,

Great that it actually helped. One more thing I forgot to mention is that you might be attracted by the contour shape and how your neck will be more relaxed but in reality it might be different. My neck is quite long (hypermobility contributes I guess) and my head always ends up on the other side of the pillow which is super annoying.

Oh and for any pillow you want to buy, have a look at amazon reviews. Not the 5 star ones.

Hi nora, i also suffer neck shoulder pain with arthritis ive tried many orthopedic pillows over the years, spent a fortune and no relief, im a front/ side sleeper, ive currently got goose down pillows so at least i can move them around and cushion inbetween my neck and shoulder, waking up with less stiffness in neck since so i suppose they are helping, good luck

Hi Bue2, I have a feather pillow currently, which is better than the synthetic fibre ones I had before for the same reason - that you can move it around. I also have a thin one underneith my ribs to keep some weight off of my shoulder, but find most of them on the floor by the morning - thinking of tying it to me! :)

A friend of mine has recently bought a Panda pillow, which uses bamboo fibres, maybe in the cover. She said it’s helped her neck/shoulder problems. I think it’s mainly a memory foam one.

It's quite trendy to use a bamboo cover with memory foam inside. The bamboo is hypoallergenic, breathable and comes from sustainable sources, which for some people matters more than the comfort.

I recently bought a 12 foot body pillow! It is still a bit hard on the neck sometimes if I’m in pain already but I do find it really helps with pressure on my shoulders etc. I would always sleep on my front which is impossible with this so it does help! And when my legs are bad I can tuck that under my knees to take pressure off them too x

Hi,

I second the Tempur cloud pillow, I had a stack of around 18-20 different pillows in the corner of my bedroom as I was constantly trying new ones out, all promising to sort neck pain etc, none of them worked ! and I was waking all through the night twisting and turning only to wake with pounding headache at least 4 times a week making it almost impossible to continue to work & of course adding to exhaustion.

I would advise maybe buying it from QVC as I did, using their great return guarantee and I paid on interest free instalments as it is expensive, I was convinced the pillow would not work for me that's why I brought it from there, it took about 2 weeks to get used to(the weight, firmness, smell etc) but persisted and WOW!

life changing for me, now I actually look forward to going to bed for the first time in many years and headaches down to maybe 2 per month, I then tried a pure silk pillow case & again adds to the comfort factor, you cannot underestimate how important decent sleep is !

Hi try Dunelm

You can at least check the softness/hardness as they have display pillows to check & reasonable prices.

I have 13 foot U shaped pillow, plus 5ft body pillow, plus one dunelm pillow that i can move around as others have stated.

Trial and error for many years as also have neck, shoulder issues. Tried memory foam, neck shaped plus loads of expensive ones but none as good as my £14 Dunelm pillows.

😊😊

Thank you to everyone for taking the time to help answer my quest for the best pillow. It's really helped narrow things down, and no doubt it will have saved me a lot of money, too!

Hi everyone! I'm also in search of an orthopedic (well, at least clinically proven) pillow that would help me with my neck pain.. you guys who used a memory foam pillow, does it really work? and is it safe to sleep on?

I think I've tried almost every pillow known to man over the years but am still on the search for the perfect one! I have found the best to be latex ones and I swap between different heights. I also need to sleep with pillows between legs, for back/hip pains and under arms fir shoulder pains. I'm using ones I made from a large piece of memory foam bought on amazon cheaply ,and cut into sizes.
