had smear test
Hi Nabby, I had mine last week, so I totally get what you are saying. I asked for a small speclum (can’t remember how to spell). Explain that it is very painful because you have fibromyalgia. I also have vulvodynia. My lovely nurse was so lovely and understanding and gave me extra lub to help. Propped up the bed afterwards at the head end so I could get up with less pain. Told me to wait and take time to get up. Usually my legs give way afterwards.
I have found that as I get older it has become more painful, maybe because of decreased hormones. However, do not put off having the test as it’s so important.
I am going to take laurielee s advice for my next one as my last one was painful , I do agree with her. decreased hormones can play a part for women of a certain age, fibro bodies can be sensitive in sorts of places I think as well. So yes not the most pleasant thing as we age I think but on our list of essential tests, take care xx
Hi there, please don't put this all down to fibro. I have had very sever smear tests for so many years. Not because of fibro . like everything in life we are all different. Many ladies are just tiny in that area. Both my kids were delivered by C section. And believe me back in the day that was not just a case of epidural and eyes wide open and awake and out pops baby lol
I could not undergo a manual biopsy for thickening of the womb many moons later for the same reason. Boy was that painful as i gave the go ahead for them to try. I had my last requested health smear test last year I am now 64. My hubby said he heard me scream right out in the waiting area. Some people are just very tiny in that area. so please don't think this is just a fibro issue xx

PS I think it also depends for some how good the nurse is thats doing the test. Some are very good others not so much 🙄
Just to add my experience - sometimes it hurts, sometimes not - just not pleasant. Once I told the nurse that it was more painful than the tooth filling I had just had. But I think it's worth the discomfort to get the tests.
Good luck for next time 🙏
Hi Nabby,
I had mine done last week & it was so very painful & I bled afterwards, I have had fibro 3 years & never had that pain before , I went in not bothered about it as it had been ok in the past so I am putting it down to the fibro
It can be painful, depends who does it, some nurses are gentle but some are less considerate. Also you can ask for a smaller speculum as I do, that makes a big difference.
