How long does it take to get into your system please? Xx

The dose has to be titrated from a low dose to a higher dose over a number of weeks. It takes about 6 weeks before the benefits can be assessed properly.

I was given gabapentin for nerve pain in my hands mostly but it does help other areas that have started playing up like my lower back and bum cheeks, i found it worked quite quickly along with my other pain meds. Hang in there and if it doesn't ease soon speak to the doctor again. x

Becks does the pain go down your back through your bum into your legs?? If so might be sciatica. I have this and the pain is horrible.

So sorry I do too from hEDS and MCTD.

Add to that 38 land falls and 1 35 foot fall out of a tree I guess I’m well seasoned at falling by now.

I should have told my now husband when we were High School sweethearts ..,honey I’ve really fallen for you...it would have applied for sure.

🤣😆🤣😆

Have you tried using heat pack followed by ice pack on your spine??

It works great for me.

Also Epsom Salts bath soaks relieve tension and aches might help some if you can tolerate soaking.

Gentle hugs and prayers my friend.

honeybug in reply toBecks2020

Glad I gave you a giggle or two.

So much for loose joints...they really let you down ..

😆🤣😆🤣😆🤣😆🤣

Or at least they did me !!

Glad you’re using heat.

I did too for years I have ZERO heat tolerance now due to Inherited Erythromylalgia.

Can’t tolerate the cold due to Raynauds Phenomenon.

I’m in a body that is decaying yet my mind still thinks I can do everything I used too.

It sure is a mental/physical tug of war when reality steps in and puts the breaks on.

However got to keep on keeping on.

Whoever said what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger???

I beg to differ;

There are a lot of exceptions to that rule.

Countless chronically ill people can attest to that!!!

Gentle hugs feel better soon.

Yes I have taken gabapentin for 22years starting with low dosage increasing over the years to six 400 mg per day along with DHC slow release 120 mg keeps my pain under control most of time although still have days where you feel nothing helps I would recommend sticking with this pain medication you’ll find difference when in to your system I spent nine months at pain clinic trying several meds to no avail

Hi Becks

I was originally put on it for my back but by accident found it really helped my fibro pains too, so my GP and consultant were happy for me to stay on it and I’ve adjusted my dose up by one tablet a day. I found the first few weeks where the dose was gradually increased and my body got used to it a bit weird, I was quite clumsy and misjudging door frames a lot so I kept bashing my arm 😂 and I felt quite wiped out but you do get used to it!

Bloop45 profile image
Bloop45 in reply toBecks2020

I take 1200mg (4 tabs) but am asking if I can take an extra one during flares as that’s the only time I seem to struggle (edited so many times because I’m clearing having a brain fog day!)

Becks2020

Hello guys I just wondered what the dosage was for co codamol and gabapentin? 😚 xx

Jellybean44 profile image
Jellybean44 in reply toBecks2020

I take 300mg 3 times a day of gabapentin, 15/500mg cocodamol 3-4times a day and naproxen 250mg 2 times a day. It definitely helps but I cannot remember the last time I had a completely pain free day. I also take 40mg of fluoxetine everyday which helps relax my muscles a bit. Hope yours helps but persevere with them until you get a combination that works for you.

Loobylou17 profile image

Hiya, I am also taking gabapentin. I take 600mg 5 times a day. It defimately helps although I couldn't tell you the last time I had a pain free day!! The gaba does certainly help though. I also use naproxen (strong anti-inflammitory) up to twice a day when needed, I find this also helps with restless uncomfortable legs. Hope this helps x

Jackie0212 profile image

I take gabapentin 3 times a day and 2 cocodamol morning and night. If I am in agony during the day I will take extra cocodamol as recommended. Hope this helps x

Hi Becks2020

I swapped to gabapentin from pregabalin 3 Years ago.

Happy to chat 😊x

Becks2020 profile image
Becks2020 in reply toStaceyME4

How do you find it xx

StaceyME4 profile image
StaceyME4 in reply toBecks2020

It was the best decision I ever made, although the transition was difficult due to incorrect advice for reducing the pregabalin. I take 900mg three times a day. It doesn’t take it all away but certainly improved my quality of life. My sleep is heavier when I do sleep but again it’s well worth it for the quality. xx

Becks2020 profile image
Becks2020 in reply toStaceyME4

Thank you so that’s 3 tablets 3 times a day how long did it take you to get to that dose? I’m so glad it works for you and eases your pain Xx

StaceyME4 profile image
StaceyME4 in reply toBecks2020

You’re welcome. That’s right. It was about 4 weeks if I remember rightly. You increase your dose based on how you manage the side effects. I’ve always been fairly good at accepting meds just not coming off them. I hope you find some relief xx

KnackeredKaty profile image

Hi Becks2020, I have taken Gabapentin for my pain and it is a great painkiller. It is important to start on the lowest dose and increase the dose gradually until you find a dose that deals with your pain. It has lots of side effects and doesn't suit everyone. I put on over one and a half stone in a couple of months and my weight kept increasing each week, so I stopped taking it. I still haven't lost the weight a year later and my pain is back, although not so extreme, yet!

I take Gabapentin 3 x 300mg per day spaced out evenly. Started 18 months ago. Had to build up slowly and it took about 2 months to settle down and start feeling the benefits. Has sorted my IBS and improved my sleep by 50% (insomnia). Not as sharp as I used to be mentally but manageable but then I suffered brain fog before which I do not now have.

Well worth a try and persisting with for a while. Hope this helps.

So you take 3 tablets 3 times a day? I’m currently sat with my heat pad on my back

Bramble71 profile image

Hi. I take Gabapentin, 2700mg a day. It makes me zombie-like much of the time but it does make a difference to the nerve pain I have following herniated discs in my back.

It's not 100% effective and it certainly doesn't seem to help the Fibro pain when I'm having a flare up. Or maybe it does and I would be worse off without it! I will never know as I was taking it before I started experiencing the symptoms of what turned out to be Fibromyalgia.

Sorry, I'm probably not much use! I would say, though, it has to be worth a try.

Bloop45 profile image

Yes I have and the side effects were awful. I experienced what I would call tripping. Not pleasant, made me sleep, slurred my speech, gradually got used to the effects and through time my pain went. It does come back from time to time but I would never go back on these tablets

luckylou52 profile image
luckylou52

yes take 600mg tabs - two tabs three times a day but am trying to do without it at the moment as self isolating and know I will end up just sleeping. Have found it makes my fingers jump and brain foggy which is no good when I've got a law essay to write at the moment! I started off on 300mg twice daily but have to say I became addicted to it. I now try only taking the dosage prescribed every other day

Daesin profile image

Lou,

Please elaborate on the addictive issue. Doc suggested this med today but nobody mentioned addiction.

Thanks

After a lot of trial and and error I have found a combination that is working ok for me at the moment. I can adjust the amount of Gaba I’m taking based on the level of pain - 900mg up to 2700mg a day (currently taking 1800mg) - along with 30mg of Duloxetine at night. More than 30mg made me feel very unwell but 30 just takes enough of the edge of to help me sleep. You need to find what works for you and one med alone may not be the answer. Good luck x

Yes I did for years, didn’t have any real impact except putting on a ton of weight and making my back worse! Apparently it makes you crave sugar and I was already a very sweet tooth! I took it for about 8 years and came off it as part of a test to see if it was having any real impact on my pain and there was no difference at all! 8 years for no real reason!

I realise everyone is different, you could try for 6 months?

Mollycooper11 profile image

I trialled it but the only thing I noticed was the nerve pain in my feet eased just a little. So with my Rheumatologist's go ahead I stopped it. I swallow a bucket load of meds and didn't need one more.

Gabapentin is alright but when used with Cocodomol or diclafenic really boosts pain relief

I have been taking gaba, started on 3x100mg per day, had the most horrendous constipation as in a stoppage, reduced to 2x100mg, still constipated, down to 1x 100mg but never had any pain relief from it. At all even after 6 weeks on 3x100mg. Can’t get appointment with doc only telephone, but struggle with tinnitus and can’t hear very well on phone. Same problem with paracetamol, codeine, morphine etc etc.

Slow release morphine tablets are far better for me than garbepentin, I’ve been on it since 2004 with gradual increases , but as soon as the pain clinic got involved and gave me gabapentin as a replacement, it sent me off my head alongside no significant pain releif , so maybe ask you’re doctor for MST but if given it please stay well hydrated as I can dehydrate a lot of people

I did but found pregabalin much better, in fact it was a wonder drug for the fibro pain at the time, took it for several years until it stopped working, I now rely on opiates.

I have commenced 200 mg daily Gabapentin. so far, zero help for neuropathic pain, priamrily in the feet and toes, but i'm guessing one of the reasons for that is the low dose. It has helped significantly with curving withdrawal effects from tapering off targin and also reduced my dependency on Zolpidem, especially with having to re dosing due to waking up every two or three hours.
