It depends how long you have been taking it. The longer you have been on it, the longer it will take to clear your system.

Half life is 20 hours. So 30mg will take 20 hours to become 15mg and a further 20 to become 7.5mg and do on. But genetics physiology and many other factors affect it.

Speak to your gp and arrange a plan for it.

Hi read the posts about getting off amytriptyline. Gp can help. If you are on 10mg then weaning off could mean leaving off one night every other night for a week then for 2 days etc down to leave off 6 days then finished that is 6 weeks in order not to get withdrawal issues. Simple question why do need to come off it? It is the drug of choice by medics for Fibromyalgia.

No it was for nerve pain an anxiety x

Hi i don't think it leaves your system for a very long time if it does at all just becomes less effecting as time goes by and get's weaker as it goes on..

It's stored in the fat layers rather than just there! reason why it takes a while for it to build up to become effective as they say.

It's the way some drugs are designed to be/work so last lasting effect.

AS it comes from being a "Happy" Pill with intention of dampening down mood swings

No am starting Escitalopram and that interacts with amytriptyline the doc says taper down for a week then nothing for a week then start new one so was hoping one week was Anouilh time for amytriptyline to come out system x

My doctor said I could stop it immediately it didn’t need weaning. So I ignored that advice and took 6 weeks to come off. I still had side effects. Doctors don’t always have the answer

True my doctor said I can start a few days after stopping my amytriptyline but think I will give it a week or more just to be safe x

Had been taking it since 2011 at 10mg. Went through a self imposed 'Reset' of ALL MEDS and came of everything for 10 weeks.

My body appeared to take roughly six weeks to completely flush my system out of all meds - having gone cold turkey! Not recommend.

Now back on at 20mg for pain management.

Don’t think I can wait 6 weeks to start my new meds

It may not be that long - everyone's body behaves and reacts differently - especially with meds.

I noticed that you've already reduced the dosage - is this a staggered approach with your GP?

Will your next move be 5mg and if so when? it could be that it could all be done and dusted in four weeks and even if it isn't, it may be that the new meds would not interact adversely with the remains of the 5mg in your system.

All the best.

No she said go down to 10 for a few days then nothing for a few days then start new meds in a couple of days but stayed on 10 for a week took last one last night so want to start my new meds maybe next Sunday or leave it another week just to make sure there out my system

Hi Boombob

I have been on them for nearly 20 years with only 1 time being reduced ( this was found to be a mistake when I queried it at my pain clinic) and I was told to go down at 5mg over 3 nights but I was on 100mg a night and it was then put back up to my normal amount and I am still on them .

Yes a staggered approach over 3 days was what I was told but I think we are all different especially our pain threshold .

I was on it 10 mg for over 20 years but it started to effect my heart so had to just stop it and I had no side effects at all so I think it’s one of those things e again I didn’t that it might effect some but not others but also I didn’t know not to just stop it and when I was on gabapentin I had to stop that and I was ok but once again I didn’t no you were supposed to taper down and at the moment I’m coming off pregabalin but am tapering down and am getting side effects so I’m wondering if sometimes if your told it will effect you your brain somehow makes it effect you
