Why are some healthcare professionals so unsympathetic and unkind?
I have to have a tooth out because it is broken to the gum line. I got referred to the hospital because of my fibromyalgia and tmd. Also because I have had reactions to the medication the gave me. I’m have a lot of fibromyalgia pain in my left side of my face so having this done will cause me significant pain and probably lay me up for at least two days.
I’m lucky enough to still be able to work from home and I’m coming to a busy time so when I got given an appointment for the end of the month I rang to change it to January.
The lady on the phone had clearly not read anything about me and then told me if my tooth wasn’t hurting I should have it out in the dentist and then I had to go through my whole health story again and explain that it not going to be straight forward and that my Dentist doesn’t want to do it. She then when on to generally patronise me and tell be she could give me an appointment in January because I should be able to come sooner !
I then suggested that I ring for an appointment in January. She then said yes but if u don’t u will be took of the list. She said this in such a patronising way I felt like saying forget it. Even the Dentist I saw who by the way I waited an hour and a half past my appointment time for was so condescending about my fibromyalgia.
I’m so fed up of dealing with people with no sympathy! I don’t except special treatment but kindness is free. We all deserve it.
Thanks for listening.

Hi Gail sorry to hear about your pain ,yes you need someone polite at the end of the phone I really can't understand people getting off patronising others to me it's rude and unnecessary at the end of the day they are getting paid to do a job (and obviously don't either listen, a lot of people are not good listeners something you should be on the end of a phone) I hope when you do go to hospital they treat you with kindness like you say it dosent cost anything to be nice , take care yasmintina xx
As a health professional myself, I couldn't agree more. I honestly don't understand why people come into this industry when they can't show even the tiniest bit of compassion to others. I always treat my patients in the same way as I would want to be treated. I found it shocking the way I was treated when I've been a patient by fellow health professionals! Clearly very few people practice the same way as I do 🤔😔xx
I must say I have been so fortunate both times when I had to have wisdom teeth out at the hospital. Sounds as though I have been fortunate. There is no need for people to treat others this way. I always feel kindness makes the wheels of the world turn easier. Do hope when you do go to have it done everything goes smoothly and you are treated with courtesy and compassion x
Really annoys me when people are so unprofessional. I find as soon as they start getting ar*** I ask their name ( full name) NHS staff have to wear ID with name on so can't refuse to tell you over the phone. Say something like I'll just add that to the notes of our conversation, ( name), now do go on with what you were saying. Tend to be suddenly more polite!
It's really unfair when you're feeling unwell anyway--- and nothing worse than tooth pain to add to the mix.
