Hi, I have started with some new symptoms in my hands/thumbs and was wondering if anyone has experienced similar. I have a weird ache in my thumbs, wrists and my thumb muscles (base), they do some strange things, twitching and delayed movements. Goes hand in hand with aching shoulders. Anyone?

New Symptoms
My hands are always sore. I've got a hand wax bath, which is soothing.
Hi. I do have aches in my hands and the base of my thumbs and my shoulders ache. I have assumed it was osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia.
Check the symptoms with your gp.

Heltadelta at 41 I feel like I should retire, everyday brings with it another ache...grrr, frustrating. I have started taking magnesium powder together with calcium and this seems to help a lot.
Hi BrendWill.
I can really empathise with how frustrating being in pain is. I took early retirement for two reasons. I was suffering with osteoarthritis and my job involved a lot of driving, but I had also changed jobs from Child Protection to Adoption.
It was a huge mistake because my Supervisor was the most miserable bully I had ever come across. With a year of my starting in adoption I was feeling very emotional, I couldn't sleep and when I went to my GP I was told I was having a breakdown. By the end of a year I was really suffering with osteoarthritis and my back pain so I couldn't have returned to work even if the bullying had been sorted out.
However if the Fibromyalgia and my back problem had started whilst I was still working I would have had to take early retirement as it has had such a profound effect on my life.
You need to think of whats best for YOU. Good luck and all the best.

Yes my hands go numb so do my feet. My fingers go stiff. I can't grip very well.movalat gel sometimes helps with the muscle ache in my fingers. Can't hold things like pans.shopping baskets just can't carry them. They just drop out of my hands.
Bobby16 It is so frustrating, sometimes have these electrical shocks down my arms for no reason. While doing the activity I seem ok, it is after the fact when I battle a lot
Sometimes my hands go into a sort of spasm and I almost throw things. Ive scalded myself with hot drinks, I picked up a plate of food and its just shot out of my hands.
I cannot hold supermarket baskets and do better with a trolley. I cannot carry anything weighing more than an empty pan. Ive smashed so many plates and mugs and Ive dropped a fork and it stuck into my foot.
Oh having Fibro is such fun.........not.
I was told by a rheumatologist that the pain is due to over stimulation of the nerve endings around the joint. With me the stiffness is due to muscle spasms. I'm taking magnesium maleate capsules which help a lot.
I'm currently reading (heavy going) recently published research which says fibromyalgia is an autoimmune condition affecting the nerve ending within blood vessels which leads to a poor uptake of oxygen. If I can accurately summarise it, I'll post it on here.

Bemoresquirrel thank you...I have read something similar down here in South Africa. For the past few days I have been battling with painful hips and dizzy spells - just when I have a good day, something comes and bites me
Isn't that always the way BrendWill! I find it really helps me to have a rough understanding of what's going on. If I can attribute the pain to something, I can shake it off quicker and stay positive.
The rheumatologist told me to take up Yoga and rather than join a class, I bought a DVD by Tamal Dodge. The scenery and music are lovely and he encourages you to just do what you can. I think I t is worth it for the breathing and relaxation alone! It does seem to help. 🙂
Many have mentioned yoga. I will have to attempt it...just worried I tie myself into a knot and will require the help of the neighbor Keeping myself busy works and I find that my mind is not focussed on the pain.
I've just found out that Tamal Dodge has his one hour beginners DVD free on YouTube. I promise it won't tie you in a knot. Just have a go at the first half hour.
I was thrilled with how much I could do and really surprised myself. He uses a webbing yoga belt/strap, but you can use a folded towel, this makes it a whole lot easier as it acts as an "arm extension" - removing the risk of tying yourself in a knot!
I find distraction in its many forms really helps me with the pain.
I would love to try Yoga but it involves getting on your knees and as BrendWll said in her response she would need the help of a neighbour, so would I but probably 2 to get me off my knees.

Hi Heltadelta, There are quite a few DVDs on Amazon for Chair Yoga, definitely no need to get on your knees! x 🙂
Hi. Strangely enough it's not the usual fibro or my back that is causing me so much pain but my knees and hips. I went to Aldi this morning and even with the aid of a trolley within a very few minutes I was hobbling round. Then my husband had to help me get into the car as my left knee was so painful I couldn't lift it. I cam straight home took painkillers and had a lie down.
As you say you think you are having a good day then pain starts somewhere else.

Hey BrendWill
I don't get the shoulder problems but i have started to have problems with my hands - achy, pain, twitching and also stop working sometimes (I will drop things or they completely freeze up) I will admit I have been a little bit worried about arthritis starting as the symptoms are similar! x
That doesn't sound good! I feel for you.
I've got the arm and shoulder pains. Mine is down to having a frozen left shoulder and a prolapsed disc at C5 which has trapped my ulna nerve. I get the pain and nerve fizzing/tingling mainly in my left arm, but I don't have problems with picking things up.
Like many of you I am tempted to do yoga, but think I might end up in a heap on the floor. Perhaps I shall have a go at the YouTube tutorial...
