Gabapentin ..

Hi everyone, I have been taking Gabapentin now for about 3 months for fibro and Sjorgrens. My feet, over the last two weeks have been very swollen and I have recently felt very dizzy and have no appetite, I have lost over a stone in about 2 months. I went to see my gp last week but he just gave me a sick note and sent me on my way. Am I just worrying for nothing, is this normal?

Hi Kaziecat, I know that gabapentin can cause changes in appetite and weight change.

I've been taking gabapentin for approximately a year. I did experience episodes of dizziness. I sometimes have a lack of appetite , which has caused my weight to fluctuate overtime .

It was wrong of your GP to just give you a sicknote and then not give any explanation for the side effects/symptoms you're experiencing.

I do hope these problems you're experiencing come to an end soon. Is there any chance you could be seen by another GP and possibly by the pain clinic? They may well be able to give you advice and more in depth explanation about what you're going through. Please let us know how you get on.

There's bound to be another member who will be able to give you the information you need. Take care.

I know dizziness is one of the most common side effects and swollen hands and feet less common, mostly weight gain but fluctuating weight can be another. They always say if a side effect is bothering you go to your GP for advice which is what you have done and haven't come away with any, grhh it makes you mad doesn't it as a stone is alot to lose without trying. Is it helping your symptoms?x

I think I would make an appointment with another doctor and ask for a review of this. It could be that this medication is not suitable for you, and I think 3 months is a long enough time to have tried this. Weight loss without dieting is not a good indication either.

Thank you for your comments, Ive got an appointment on Thursday with another doctor so will see what she says. Ive had no relief at all of my symptoms so it feels like I am taking this medication for the sake of it. It felt as though the last doctor couldnt wait to get rid of me so I felt a bit daft and embarrased when I left. X

Hi Kaziecat

I really am so genuinely sorry to read that you are suffering and struggling in this way, and all the things that you have mentioned could be side effects of Gabapentin. I want to sincerely wish you all the best of luck with your appointment on Thursday and hopefully you will get some answers from this. Please take care of yourself.

All my hopes and dreams for you
