Can you tell me if will need to attend another dwp medical for my esa. I am 63 year old male and had to take ill health retirement from my NHS Job at 60 years old. I last attended a medical at 61. I suffer from disc degeneration in the neck area giving me severe nerve pain which i take gabapentin for. I am going through a operation on my neck next month to try and alleviate this problem. I am stressed out with the thought of having to attend another dwp medical. I was informed by a former work colleague that due to my age i would no longer need to attend one as i collect my state pension at.65. Is this true.

Hello.

I ahve never had a dwp aassessment yet. What do they do? That scares me as every day is different.

I hope you don't have to go through more hoops......it's adding on stress which makes things worse. I know that from experience having had my ill-health retirement turned down and treatment they reccomended refused......not sure where to go now!

Anyway, good luck with things. Hope you are having a less bad day.

The medical I had to attend after the two years wasn't at all like the first. It is just to check that your health hasn't improved. From what I can gather because people who claimed when they had hip problems before and after surgery (purely as an example) failed to inform the DWP of their improvements. So we all have to prove that we are still in poor health. Personally, like you I have degenerative discs, I fail to see the necessity of putting us through more stress when the clue is in the title of the medical condition. It is degenerative. And like you I have had to take early retirement, at 50.

I hope someone can tell you if you will still need to undergo an assessment, but as you are under 65 I think that you will. Please don't get stressed about it yet. Once they contact you is soon enough. I'm sure you can resolve any issue at the time 🐸

There must be somewhere you can find this. I might have found it on the DWP site. I do know it depends on your date of birth. I was on the old incapacity benefit and was assessed at 60 even though just two years off my pension. But if I had been six weeks older would have been left alone!!

It often appears to revolve around when you are due for reassessment as often the award is given for a period of time. If that period is up very near to your official retirement age you might find you are not called in for a further assessment. If the date is up soon unfortunately you might have to go through the hoop but having your problem get worse as it appears to have done hence unfortunately your need for an operation hopefully you would still be granted it . Good luck with whatever happens.x

I am so genuinely sorry but I do not know the answer to this. However, FMA UK have a dedicated benefit helpline that you could ring or email and I am sure they should know the answer to this question.

I want to genuinely and sincerely wish you all the best of luck with this and with your operation.

All my hopes and dreams for you
