Lovely picture.

Yes I have had the same for years it sends you mad sometimes. I put it down to some of the medication I am on.

My friend was diagnosed with severe tinnitus and in the end had a very discrete hearing aid fitted which had a masking sound. It seemed to retrain her hearing and after about a year she did not need to wear it so often as it seemed to help her with the worse symptoms.

I find it is worse when I am very tired or stressed or the pain is bad. I tend to put on soft music in the background or if it is at night put my MP3 player on so again I am listening to something nice.

it is like sea on the shore at the moment so I am going to go out in the garden where there is a bit of wind and do some light gardening and the sound of the wind will mask it.xxx

You're beautiful. I have tinnitus, not constantly, but intermittently. It's almost like microphone feedback for me.

I get ringing in my ears sometimes, but it only lasts for a few seconds. Also on occasions whilst laying in bed at night I seem to hear music, which sounds far away. It varies from being a brass band to a full orchestra! I think there is a medical term for hearing music that has no external source. I think it's linked to general tinnitus.

I was sent to a specialist researching tinnitus. She told me that tinnitus is only caused by some people's brains and hearing not working properly to mask the usual electrical sounds that their own brain is making. She explained that the sounds themselves are normal and everyone has them.

But just like our heartbeat, various noises of cars going by or people walking in the same house, and other subtle noises, our brains have become good at filtering anything we don't need to pay attention to. So when we have tinnitus, it's because for some reason we have stopped filtering that brain activity sound.

In my case, she thought this was brought on by hypervigilance when I was in an abusive situation for a few years previously. That was when it had started. I would listen for him to arrive home and this she thought had started me having this acute awareness to the point that I was actually hearing my brain sounds.

I know that the reasons and causes behind it are different for everyone. But, I believe most tinnitus is caused by being more than usually aware of electrical sounds in the brain. You can research it online to see if this is true.

Like Rosewine mentions above, I was told to try various natural sounds that will mask the electrical buzzing and that gradually I could train myself to be less and less aware of them. The specialist gave me a pillow speaker that you connect to any music player and you can use it to play ocean sounds or rain or just 'white noise' recordings. It helped me go to sleep at night. She loaned me a machine that has several of those nature sounds pre-programmed.

The pillow speakers you can buy online very cheap for only a few pounds. The noise machines... they even make them for babies now. I don't think they cost too much, but you don't need one if you find something free. For example, there are a lot of those ambient noise recordings on YouTube, and also Spotify has a lot of them.

I had to move away and was unable to continue with the treatment with this really good specialist. I still have the problem and it gets especially bad when I am very ill. Any kind of additional stress will cause it to increase and sometimes it's almost like screeching and seems to drown out other things.

I use headphones and play one of those on YouTube or Spotify to help me relax.

It is a good idea to ask your doctor to refer you for hearing test, just to make sure that your ears are okay. I had a hearing test from the specialist, and she repeated the test after a few weeks time to be sure.

I think maybe it is possible to gradually get to the point where you are no longer bothered by this and your awareness is no longer on the electrical sounds.

I have had this since 2011 and doctor says its tinnitus and they can't do anything for me. Sometimes it's bad and other times I hardy notice. I try to focus on other times when it gets bad.
