Hi everyone

I hear ppl saying they are on morphine I mentioned it to my doc and he said he would rather I take co-codamol for the pain but it's not helping and the pain is becoming so bad at times I can hardly walk, do you think I should push my doc to give me morphine or not

Thanks x

H granniescrochet, I asked my gp about morphine and he said that he didnt want me to start on something like this that I would be on for forty to fifty years as I was so young, which cheered me as I was feeling old - I am fifty - cheered me up that he thought I have another forty or fifty years ahead of me, (I think!) Hi.

Thats a hard one.

There are too many factors to consider. I was pumped full of the stuff both through drip and oral morphine. Did nothing! Literally nothing.

This was when I first snapped knee. I was on both forms of morphine, tramadol, paracetamol, AND when thay were doing nothing and I was still writhing in agony thedosed me up on pethidine! !!

I kid you not. I was a zombie. However despite being a dribbling mess, it only took for someone to accidentally knock the bed and it was like all the drugs left and I was screaming. I was then left in this pain for however long it was until the pumped me up again.

Doctors were idiots. Therei said it, and I cant say im sorry either. One actually said to me, and I quote "I dont know what you expect me us to do, you have reached the maximum level of all medication. There isnt anything else. You aregoing to have to learn to control someof the pain yourself"

I cant tell you how much I cried after that. I had been stuck in hospital for 2 weeks.

Then the pain team arrived. I saw this amazing lady. She was brilliant.

For starters she pulled a nurse (senior matron) to one side and asked her why the hell I was still being pumpedfull of morphine etc if it clearly wasn't working and she then lodged a formal complaint about what the doc had said to me as apparently it was rubbish...there aretons of different pain relief meds out there all do diff things.

She put me on a slow release called oxycontin (its a controlled drug for severe pain) and gabapentin (often usedfor epilepsy az it is a neuropathic drug)

I kid you not I promise I was walking with my zimmer (zlright only 4 steps but still!)

by that afternoon!!!

Moral of that me me me me waffle is dont take one opinion/advice. Ask to be refurred, ask for a sec opinion and dont continue taking something that doesnt work for you. They may be medical professionals but they are only human and they make mistakes. Only you know your body. Go with what you feel.

Sorry for the life story

I hope you feel better soon. Thinking of you

I believe doctors are becoming more reluctant to prescribe morphine lately, my daughter is having an awful time coming off this since major spinal surgery recently, it isn't to be taken lightly.I know it's so hard to cope with the constant pain, I have never had anything that helps very much with fibro. I know it's not any help all I can suggest is proper rest when you need to. Wishing you all the best. Lou x

Hi Granniescrochet

I am so sorry to read that you are in so much pain and I genuinely hope that you can find some resolution and relief to this issue. You have asked a very interesting question, but sadly it is one that I cannot answer!

I can say that many people do suffer allergic reactions to all kinds of pain medication, so this is something that you should take into account with any pain relief? Many pain medications can be addictive if you take them for too long a time, so again, this should be taken into account?

I want to wish you all the best of luck with whatever you decide to ask your GP about? It may help to do a bit of online research into many differing pain medications so you have some ammunition in your when you do discuss this with them?

Take care

Ken x

I think at least your Gp can try you on something different and a bit more help for the pain. I take Tramadol, these come in a variety of strengths and you can also get the extended release for bed time. Co-codamol in lower dosages you can buy in chemists and it's probably the most common pain killer used for starting to help with fibro, but it clearly doesn't with you. It's a hella jump from Co-codamol to Morphine, so I'd ask your Gp for a trial of Tramadol if nothing else and a referral to the pain clinic. Hugs xx

I agree with Lins2000, it's too much of a jump from co-codamol to morphine. I'm on extented release tramadol morning and evening topped up with paracetamol as and when needed. I also take Gabapentin and Citalopram (amitryptoline is what is usually used for Fibro but these suit me better). Neither are pain relief but are often prescribed for Fibro. X.
