LOOKING FOR WHEELCHAIR ACCESABLE ACCOMADATION.

DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW I CAN GET ON LISTS FOR SHELTERED HOUSING/WHEELCHAIR ACCESSABLE, I AM ON 3RD FLOOR FLAT WITH FANTASTIC VIEWS OF THE HARBOUR AND ACROSS THE BAY,IN TORQUAY.wANT TO STAY IN TORBAY-PAIGNTON - ST MARYCHURCH=BABBACOMBE.CANT TALK TO A VIEW.ANY HELP GRATFULLY ACCEPTED.

I sincerely hope that you are as well as can be? I was wondering if you were a council tenant? If so, you can contact the council and apply for a home swap, they will send a occupational therapist to assess you on your need for rehousing. If you are in an housing association property the same thing applies and you can search both council and association properties on their prospective websites.

If you own your property there is not a lot that you can do as you will not a lot the necessary points needed to get a move.

As Ken said the council and private housing associations will need to have you assessed by an Occupational Therapist, however if you have a private landlord you'll still need an OT assessment to apply for a council or housing association property, the best thing to do is contact social services and they will arrange to send out an OT to not only assess you for your need of a new home but also any home aids that may help your life be a little easier (this also helps when you claim DLA/PIP so keep any OT paperwork somewhere safe) once you have been assessed the OT will be able to send the council a letter stating that you NEED to be rehomed, one thing you should remember is there is a dire lack of disability/wheelchair adapted houses in this country and the waiting list will be very long, I've been waiting for 4 years and have had no joy from them even though I can't leave our home because of the 6 steps outside the front door which they say they can't put a ramp over because it would be too steep, the landlords simply say it is a wheelchair accessable flat even though the wheelchair cannot enter the house unless folded down because the hallway space when you come through the front door is smaller than the wheelchair is (front of footrests hit the wall before the back wheels are over the threshold, making it impossible to turn it into the hallway without folding down) and there is a storage heater in the hallway that makes the hallway too narrow to pass if in a wheelchair, but apparently this doesn't stop it from being classed as wheelchair accessible, so long as it is on the ground floor it is classed as "wheelchair friendly" no matter how suitable it actually is or is not :s

I am on the 3rd floor,and although there are 2 lifts the property is not suitable for wheelchair access. I have had a letter from my pain consultant saying I need to be rehoused,also my careworker filled in the forms.I am in the highest band, but as you say wheelchair accessable sheltered properties are hard to come by.Thank you for your response.

i have joined home swapper.co.uk. and you put in you,r details, and photos of you,r house and what you are looking for and they contact you,r landlord and see if they are on the lists of councils or housing associations and you should get full membership and then you can go for propertys you like. good luck to you in you,r search

Been on home swapper for a few months,but can never open their attatchments.Was sent 10 of 29 matches but could not access any details.I am now looking to the private sector.But will have to make sure of permanent tenancy and all facilities I need.Not going to rush.Fingers crossed.Thank you to all who replied to my plight.

Hi. I went to see my Housing Manager and explained my situation. She gave me a form to fill in and then people from Housing medical section came out to see me and asked a lot of questions. After that I was given high priority for a bungalow and I was offered one about 3 months afterwards. I was also lucky to be able to stay in the same area, It does not matter whether you are in Housing accommodation or own your own house the first thing to do is make an appointment to talk to the Housing Manager

Already spoken to housing manager.In top priority band but still could take 1/2 years.No properties available.One bungalow had 47 bids on it.Those people were in the same band as me and had been waiting over a year.Looking into private sector now.Thank you for your advice.
