Hi I have been taking Amitriptyline for 3 years, it don't help with the pain for me, but for about 2 years before that I woke every day feeling like I had a hangover, when I started with the ami, that stopped.
you can take pain killers with them, but it maybe best to talk with your DR first
I've recently started on aymltripaline too...I'm on week 4 so 40mg going up to 50mg on Thursday week 5 and I have noticed that it does help me sleep better as it has helped break the cycle (less sleep = more pain). I have been told 6 weeks plus before you feel any benefit. I also take pregablin 50mg for pain with codeine/paracetamol on really bad day's...talk to your GP about your options x
Hi Lisa, I think they are just meant to help you cope as well as maybe take just a little bit of pain away, I'm on sertraline and feel better for it. They just help me cope, and boy do we have a lot to cope with lol....hugs ...Dee x
i've been taking amytriptaline and sertraline for about 9mths now. they have helped with my mood, i used to fly off the handle alot, but they haven't really done anything for the pain.
I think the most important aspect of your question is to ask you - How do you feel? Do you feel that your mood is changing? Do you feel that they are helping you? Do you believe that your behaviour has changed?
Amatripteline was the first antidepressant tablet ever invented and after mass use by the public it was discovered that it had pain suppressant qualities for conditions such as migrianes and other neurological complaints.
I do not know how the dosage works with these things so I cannot really answer from a medical stance, and I am very new to all of this as I have only been diagnosed just under a month. I have been prescribed nortriptyline tablets initially and they have eased the pain on my right side a little but it is early days. But I really do believe that how you feel is the most important thing! I hope to bump into you again somewhere on the site.
It can take a few weeks for you to notice any positive effects. For me the most important thing it does is to help me to sleep, so my largest dose is at bedtime (25mg in the morning, 75mg at night) I don't always sleep all night (usually up twice) but it works for me but sadly, we're all different and react to different meds in different ways.
Morning, sorry to hear you having rough time, maybe would be good to speak with gp (if they are sympathetic). I took it for 2 days and felt so awful (zombie like and awful dry mouth) that I stopped taking it and have since refused to have any more prescribed. It doesn't always work as pain relief. There are alternatives you can discuss with your GP tho their effectiveness seems to vary between individuals. Take care
I started taking amitriptyline nearly 3 weeks ago and it is only just beginning to have any effect.
Beforehand I was taking 150mg Pregabalin morning, noon and night, but waking up by 3 or 4am with pain and couldn't get back to sleep. I was already feeling exhausted so fatigue got worse as well as early morning pain, stiff legs etc.
I now take 150mg Pregabalin in the morning and at midday, but take 20 or 30 mg Amitriptyline at night, usually at least 2 hours before going to bed. The difference it makes is that it helps me get back to sleep if I wake at 3am. I wake in such a groggy state that I seem to fall back to sleep - sometimes til 9am! So for the 1st time in ages, I get a good night's sleep
I have been taking 20mg Amitriptyline since diagnose a few months ago. Was okay to start with but recently had a couple of really bad sessions at night. But most nights I have slept better but does not help during the day. Already take a mixture of different tablets including paracetamol and tramadol for arthritis. Have long standing issues such as high blood pressure etc and 18 months ago had two serious emergency operations of which I am still recovering from. But some night I do wish I could have morphine so I can be completely out of it.
Hi , I take 150mgs of Amitriptyline a night, I have been on
this medication for about 8 years now, and have slowly had the dosage increased. 150 mgs is the top dosage for Fibro. At first it makes you sleepy, but that wears off, I can take that much and still stay awake all night. My understanding is that it depresses the central nervous system, and also improves the effectiveness of other painkillers. I take paracetemol and codiene if I need to. You build up a tolerance of the sedation effect of Amitriptyline, so need to take it for a while to judge its effectiveness.
The only thing I can say, is that reading how some of you are suffering, it must be worth a go. I was unable to walk ten years ago and in constant pain. My life now is much improved, I still have Fibro and flare ups and sleepless nights, and I don't live a normal, full life. I am not in great pain though and can enjoy life, which is more than some of you can manage. So try the Amitriptyline in the correct dosage, it has to be worth a try.

I also take amitriptaline (100 mg, at night. It is fantastic for helping me sleep and for that reason I love it. Only thing is, as comments above say, the effect begins to wear off and I have had to gradually increase dose. It made me groggy at the beginning but that too wears off, so that's a good thing. I take it with gabapentin, though I'm not convinced that it is that helpful. I also have tramadol for pain (in emergency) and naproxen for pain and inflammation (I get swollen hands). Give it a good try and keep an open mind!
amatriptaline did not agree with me, messed with my moods made me worse, so stop using it . Best thing I did. tramadol gives me a little relief, you have to use this one little. I keep a small steady level of paracetamol in my system, the pain never goes away for me. good luck hope this helps you.
I was on amotriptiline then moved onto nortriptyline as less side effects. I took parras and Tramadole alongside them every day. It helped for a couple of years. On worse days I took Dihydrocodine as well. I have now been taken of them as my body wasn't reacting to them I was amuned to them. So after the worst month ever coming off them I am now on TAPENTADOL Seems to be better and off 2 types regular meds for 1 so got to be better long term. You take care and I hope you get a bit of peace soon. X
