I have OA of lumber spine with bone spurs and SI joint inflammation. I have tried to do exercise again but find afterwards I cant move with severe back and hip pain. Feel like I am aggravating this condition rather than helping it

Exercise
Hi there, have you seen a physio as maybe they could advise you of what exercises you should and shouldn't be doing.Or can you google exercises for OA and see what comes up?Maybe just some gentle stretching exercises?x
Yes I am following exercises that physio gave me, I had to stop them for 3 months whilst I was investigated for ms and put weight on due to decreased mobility so trying them again to see if they will help
I am in favor of physical therapists so no injury happens.
Working the body in a pool of water certainly can help to
loosen up the joints and it's less damaging to the body's
joints. Good Luck.=)
Maybe you could check with the physio to see if the pain you are experiencing is the norm or maybe you might need to adjust what you are doing x
Ask your physic about hydrotherapy. I find swimming helps and one of the swimming teachers at the local pool has helped me adapt a swim stroke so I can swim without strain or pain.

Thanks everyone. Love the hydro pool idea but dont think there is one local to me. Cant use normal pool as too cold and flares fibro. Waiting for spinal injections and if they fail they are going to severe the nerve quite evasive but would be nice to have mobility back. Used to walk and run my dogs morning and night really miss it and trying my best to keep moving but huge struggle currently dragging my left leg as hip pain is horrendous. Called gp and he wants to give me morphine he said its pressure from spine on nerves
Sorry to hear all this,is this all down to your OA or is it fibro related as well?x
I have heard nothing but good about those injections..I live in the USA and the procedure is used as a diagnosis tool as well..they put the injection in the facet joints of the back and if the pain goes away -it's a dead ringer for facet disease..(inflammation of the facet joints) Few people decide to take it to the point of nerve severe but it might be the perfect option for you especially if the facet joints respond well to the injections. Best of luck to you..I have a feeling that the dogs are going to keep on schedule of running..(I run with mine too) If you are dragging your leg, I would not do any sort of exercise until the doctor or physical therapist okays it.. The last sentence that you wrote is
worrisome..did you have the mri yet? That's a tell all. xxx
Bit of both evils I think. Dreading winter coming.
Thanks Yikes. I have had an MRI and there was confusion as one radiologist thought he seen inflammation but they asked for a second opinion and other radiologist said no. My Gp wasn't happy so referred me back to rheumi in a hope they would do an MRI with contrast but it wasn't done.
Hi wall, I suffer, having had two fractures of my lumbar spine, and one in my thoracic, so I understand to a degree what you are going through. I agree with everyone who has mentioned hydrotherapy, as it is safe and supportive of your joints. Even if you did walking up and down in he hydrotherapy pool it would benefit you as the resistance of the water is good and effective. I used to swim at county level when I was younger, but was unable to continue "proper" swimming about seven years ago when I got RA in my shoulder and couldn't do crawl (my stroke) any more! I had a replacement nearly three years ago of the left one and am waiting for the other one to be done! but like you, now I find that the temperature of the pool precludes me even trying unless it's in the hydrotherapy pool which is rubbish for proper swimming ! Frustrating as it was something I really loved
Anyway, I hope you find something that suits you and that you enjoy

Thank you I too was a keen swimmer prior to this I used to swim a mile 5 times per week was a fitness junkie hence why it's evsn more frustrating
I too used to do at least a mile a day, and until my shoulder started arguing with me, I loved it and never missed a daily swim. When the shoulder probs first started, I thought I would work through the pain, until it came to a point where the pain overwhelmed me I agree that when you can't do what you love it's just soooo frustrating !
Good luck though
I resorted to going in water breast high and I walked, almost jogged back and forth the swimming pool..it will burn calories like mad and it will save your shoulder when it's really sore.. Water Aerobics are one really good thing that I used to do..I quit doing that since I had knee surgery..but I think that helped to keep my joints very flexible. Yep, water will keep you a fitness junkie still..Good Luck..
Do you know I too used to swim every day and walk a couple of miles untill I could not get out of the garden gate for the pain. Now two sticks a wheelchair is my mode of travel. How I would love to be able to walk down the village to go swimming very frustrating isnt it..

Indeed it is gins, and I know that even when I get my right shoulder replaced my Fibro has advanced so much that I won't be able to countenance swimming properly again, which I hate, but Fibro strips one of so so many things doesn't it ! Oh dear .........
Happy Saturday gins

Lots of people have those days that they cannot even dress themselves..that's how exhausting disease can be..If you have
enough energy to care for yourself..shower, meals, keep hair neat,
you are doing really well..isn't it funny how our definition of success
has changed with disease? My RLS kept me awake the past 2 nights.
I am like the walking dead today...but I am going on a road trip later
on today..not driving..just being ready is my definition of success today.
haha. =))) You garden besides all of your crafts? You look to me like
you are doing amazing then! =)))
We need new bodies. Pain clinic doctor actually told me that I need to watch my calorid intake and portions and exercise. I replied I used to be a health junkie till all this started as for calorie intake and portions its sometimes very difficult to eat due to hiatus hernia and feeling sick. Makes me wonder how these doctors would cope if they had this. I have been slim all my life and gone up two dress sizes due to reduced mobility not through stuffing my face grrr
wall1409,
Best tip for anyone..make up a dip or two for veggies..
the minute you get home from the grocery store, don't put away the
veggies right away. Sit at the kitchen table or grab a stool to cut up
the veggies, wash the grapes so they are all ready for you to grab and
enjoy..I put my veggies in small baggies and use tarter cups with lids to
pack inside of the bag..have some lower calorie snacks like peanut butter
on a celery stick..add raisins for sweetness..try eating deviled eggs..they are
filling, have a little fat but they are tasty as can be..eggs are loaded with protein..
Keep some yogurt handy as well..100 calorie microwave popcorn is waist
friendly. pack just a few cookies in a sandwich size baggie..I know that this
stuff takes massive amounts of energy especially when you just finish the
market shopping..you will be getting healthier and stronger every day if
you start by weeding out the chips and big sweets, breads..
Get that hernia looked at..what a shame if it's making you sick. Being slim
isn't everything..I know some pretty bitchy people that are size 0...You
have a good personality and a pretty good outlook on life.
The doctors see diseases every appointment they have all day long..Fibro
is one that doesn't get a ton of sympathy...It deserves attention! =))
Honestly the dip is the secret for getting in good calories..make it fat free or
low fat..those veggies will be gone and keep your fuller. Good Luck.
Got letter from pain clinic doctor, grrr he said I was 54 yrs tut tut. It mentioned in letter that the injection is going to be used as a diagnostic tool also as he thinks I have SI joint disfunction due to OA of the spine
Now remember that for those who say "nothing showed up on the MRI" You
will remind them about facet disease..Gosh I hope that it's a dead ringer for you. =)))
OA of the spine happens to almost everyone by middle age..I hope that he said to you
that it was age appropriate...I have that as well..I have a tiny slippage of the vertebra..
but it's pretty normal for age 47.
I mean this in the kindest way..watch what you eat so you don't have the extra
weight to lug...I know that it's hard but let this be the start of making those few
little changes so that the injections can do their job and less pressure is
on those joints..Good Luck...=)
I have a motorcycle accident when I was 19 and told I would never walk again but 2 yrs later I walked. Unfortunately this is the result years on so not so much normal degeneration. Vicious circle you gain weight through mobility issues then when you try and exercise you get stopped in your tracks with sciatic pain
