does anyone know what happens when you see a a psychologist?
They just talk to you and ask about your life, and how your illness affects you. They will then recommend any therapy they think necessary. CBT is the usual one, and it is very good!

Unfortunately I was more chilled and happy with life than he was... If I had stayed much longer I think he would have started telling me his problems
This made me laugh hehe x
I have to say, that I saw 2 councillors who both ended up telling me all their problems, funny really!

CBT stands for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - it's very useful for people with chronic pain syndromes, and is becoming the treatment of choice.
Getting your life sorted and becoming relaxed about your problems makes a huge difference to the impact your condition has on you.
I think you will like it, if that's what's offered - it made an enormous difference to me!

I found it very good. Got my followup appointment next week to see if I need any additional support.

I see a psychologist and psychiatrist(very bad mental condition)Basically they chat to U to see how it effects U eg suicidal, self harmer..etc.then they discuss either relaxation courses, attendance at day clinic, hobbies and other things to help U out examples medication,Yoga to relax, stress management and many other ways to help..they will do everything they can to help U,they are friendly and may even recommend going to therapy groups where U meet people with similiar mental health issues and show U how to cope.they worked wonders 4 me.So don't worry there's nothing to it,and They will Help....All the best and I hope things work out 4 U ...
I agree with chaozz. Infact that was exactly what I was going to write lol beat me to it. Yes they're generally very friendly and helful mine has even got me in touch with an OT - my GP wasn't keen on referring me to them but my psych could see how much I was struggling. Wish you luck xx
Had my first pyscho app yesterday, been to see one before after post natal stuff who just kept asking "and how are you ,today" in a very patronising way.The one I saw yesterday was very good , told her I wasn't happy about coming but will have a chat.Did say things in front of my hubby(who I had warned before hand)that I might say things he wouldn't like, but he knows where the door is lol.right now I've been concentrating on getting me better, so need a physio more than a counillor x
I saw a physicologist, a few years ago,she was heavily pregnant, kept flapping a wad of a paper as a makeshift fan, like a manic windmill in a tornado, asked me two questions, and spent approx. 8 mins with me and then said goodbye went off in a room and wrote a letter to say I had several health issues and as they couldn't be proven in her opinion (really? didn't realise she was a surgeon!) that she felt I was attention seeking !!!! excuse me but I wasn't the one jumping round the room wafting paper like a manic b***y windmill!!! besides spondylosis can be proven and if fibro can't then we must all be mad on here!!, so I would never ever go to see one again even if my life depended on it.... I felt she made a negative impact on me...so how does that help, besides I was there because of pelvic pain nothing else so I don't think she had a right to comment on anything elsre to do with me..
electricjaws I am so sorry you had a bad experience with your therapist. Other people please do not be put off. electricjaws my husband is a counsellor and works in both humanistic and CBT therapies. As I have fibro he is very sensitie to people like us. I feel that you are letting this one bad experience colour your thoughts about therapy. I myself had a really bad expeience with one specialist therapist and was very nearly put off for life but sought out a councellor and I am so glad I did because he was fantastic and did a great deal to help.
Sometimes we have to try a couple and find the right one.
If one goes through a gp it is more than likely it will be a CBT practitioner as this is the way the nhs is set up.
A lot of private councellors will do a reduced rate for unwaged and students. You have to ring around. The BACP counselling directory is a good way to find therapists in your area.
Good luck bellablot.
I did't have a good experiense either...was told the chronic pain I had i my left hip was all in my head and to go away and learn to live with it..I replied that I'd keep going back to the doctor till it was proved it was a physical problem....took me 2 years and in the end had to pay to see a consultant privately to be told within 10 minutes it was a trapped periformus muscle and it would need a course a injections......
Would never see another thats for sure....
