Hi Emma

The condition you refer to is called “hydrosalpinx”, which when translated, simply means water in the tube! Fallopian tubes have a natural lubrication in them to allow sperm to swim and the egg to travel down. Occasionally, the end of the tube(s) called “fimbriae” stick together. This then blocks the “exit” for excess fluid to escape. There is then only one way out for this fluid and that is through the womb end of the tube. Many consultants now believe that this excess of fluid can prevent implantation of a developing embryo, as it can be “washed” out. Because of this the tubes are often removed prior to IVF.

Quite a few people are now opting for egg sharing. It’s obviously one way to cut costs a little through what can be a very expensive time. Most women find the experience comforting in the knowledge that they are helping someone else trying for a baby. You won’t know where the shared eggs have gone or whether that lady was successful with her round of treatment, but as I have said, you should feel good that you have given someone a much longed for opportunity to try too. A good idea also would maybe to have a session of implications counselling beforehand, if you have not already done, so that you fully understand what is involved.

I wish you well with the eventual outcome Emma.

Hi Emma,

Having just had my tubes removed following a laparoscopy, myself and my husband have also thought about the possibility or helping others by donating whilst going thought IVF . So far my searching leads me to think it depends on your local team as to whether it is an option. my hubby's only concern is if ivf doesnt work for us and I start to dwell on the "what happened to my eggs" just a thought to share which I hadn't considered but as an eternal thinker I can see his concerns. Please update if you have made a decision it would be great to know.

Good luck I did egg sharing last November, at londons women's clinic Cardiff, I got my ivf and meds free because of it and only had to pay for a few appointments and sperm as I used a donor. I wasn't able to find out any details about the donor but I was able to find out if their cycle worked and if It had I would have been able to find out how many babies they had whether they were boys or girls after they were born. Sadly their cycle didn't work but mine did and I am now almost 14 weeks pregnant from a 5 day single blasto transfer and I have 5 frozen day 6 blasto embies. I produced 15 eggs so I had 8 and the recipient had 7. 7 of mine fertilised naturally and 6 made it to blasto. Over all the experience has been wonderful very little stress the staff at the clinic were wonderful and I am looking forward to the birth of my baby in August it is a wonderful thing that you are doing and I wish you every luck with it x :)
