Endometriosis caused by Egg Retrieval internal bleeding?

Whatwillbewillbe_ profile image

Has anyone experienced this? I just had my 3rd egg retrieval in November and it was by far the hardest one. Subsequently I have had a detailed ultrasound with a well known Professor who is good at diagnosing endometriosis from an ultrasound. He told me I have a lot of internal blood clots and inflammation that was caused by the egg retrieval and it’s highly likely that it will develop into endometriosis. Has this happened to anyone else?

This sounds very odd. Unless you already have an endometrioma that was punctured at egg collection. Why would bleeding from a source in the pelvis cause endometriosis? Endometriosis isn’t seeded by blood in general. The needle for egg collection passes through the vaginal wall to the ovarian follicle and shouldn’t be going anywhere near your endometrium.

I think maybe you need to clarify a bit further about this. Also predicting that something will cause endometriosis also sounds very odd to me - either you have it now or you don’t. Why worry you about a potential future something.

Hi there, that sounds very odd to me too. MRI is better at seeing endometriosis than ultrasound but key hole surgery is the gold standard for diagnosis. Like Endofitall said, IVF isn't a cause of endo. I'm sorry you had a tough egg collection, I found mine very challenging, and then to get this feedback is understandably concerning but I'd urge you to be seen by a specialist in Endo and get a MRI if you can. Egg retrieval doesn't cause endometriosis. Could it exaggerate existing I'm not sure but it certainly doesn't cause it.

Hello, thanks for sharing your experience. I did egg freezing last year. I did not have a known diagnosis of endometriosis prior to this and everything looked healthy on a pre-treatment scan. I started the stimulation medications and had an awful time with horrible sensations and terrible gastrointestinal symptoms. I told the clinic and they said to continue with the meds. I ended up ovulating on the day of my collection, meaning that no eggs could be frozen. I decided to try again later to freeze some eggs and a small endometrioma was found on one of my ovaries. I’m assuming I must have had endometriosis prior to this but I never experienced any symptoms. I’m not sure how I ended up was an endometrioma - I wonder if it was a combination of the medications and a painful ovulation?

thank you all for your responses but I have been told by a very well respected Professor who looked at my scans early in this year and compared it to post egg retrieval and it says that there is significant inflammation now which could lead to endometriosis.

He told me he has seen this before on other patients.

I did not/do not have an endometrioma.

I think they aren’t entirely sure what causes endometriosis so this could be the case. I didn’t have any signs or symptoms of it before my egg freezing either.
