Context- TTC for nearly 2 years. Have a query of endo but unconfirmed and don't have entirely typical symptoms - have pain but extreme, it's more extreme blood loss. All tests so far normal for both me and my husband. I'm f32, husband M33.
We recently had our first fertility apt and the consultant suggested I can have either a hsg or a laparoscopy. They were recommending laparoscopy. The wait for that is 4-5 months though and I could have a hsg within a month and depending on the results start Ivf. It's also possible the results might mean I do need a laparoscopy. But they won't let me have both unless the hsg has something so I have to decide now which to go down.I don't want a form of surgery if I can avoid it and I'm not bothered about knowing if I have endo or not.
My understanding is the hsg can find tubal stuff that could impact fertility or ivf but the laparoscopy is much more in depth and means things can be treated in the same procedure. If the hsg is normal, I could still have something like endo but the consultant said endo wouldn't impact IVF rates only natural conception.
I'm unclear if a laparoscopy could aid IVF for other reasons or if there's other factors to hsg or laparoscopy I'm not aware of. So I'm looking for any advice, experiences of others, reading etc.
Any help would be appreciated!

Best of luck for your upcoming journey, this Instagram live from Dr Tim Child is really worth a watch, as answers lots of questions about IVF and endo! Hope it’s helpful!
Hi. A laparoscopy provides a chance of a good look round and a tidy up. The HSG often done at the same time, known as a lap and dye. Fluids leaking from blocked tubes can sometimes prevent a developing embryo from implanting. Hope all goes well. Diane
Thank you. My understanding is the hsg can check for the fluid leaking? Or can only the lap do that? Just really hoping to avoid the lap so hoping the hsg is enough.
Hi. If a tube is blocked in any way, it can prevent excess lubrication getting out through the end. It then drips into the womb and can prevent a developing embryo from implanting. Because of this they are often clipped or removed. Diane
Hi, When I had my diagnostic laparoscopy for Endometriosis, I also had a hysteroscopy and my consultant asked if I'd like them at the same time to do the Hystersalpinogram/Hycosy/tubal patency dye test (honestly don't know which one or what it's officially called) but they diagnosed Bilateral complete tubal blockages.
Can't they do both for you whilst you're under GA getting your laparoscopy? Best wishes x
Sorry my post isn't clear, they would do the hsg during the lap or do the hsg. I'm hoping the hsg is enough then if it's showing something to have a lap but if it's all showing fine to just go straight to IVF. I don't really want to have the surgery if I don't need to.
I had a diagnostic laparascopy with hydrotubation. They didn't find endometriosis and the recovery was quick. Not sure about recovery if they had found anything. Xx
I had both done at the same time - had tubes flushed, lining checked and Endo removed. Fell pregnant for the first time in 6 years (naturally) the cycle after. Sadly miscarried at 7.5 weeks (shit egg quality) - I really believe the lap helped.
