I’m 5 weeks. Had my OTD BFP LAST Wednesday. I haven’t had any spotting, lots of cramps all the way through. And then today I went to the loo and I had one brown speck on my pad. I haven’t had anything else yet and it was a few hours ago. Had anyone else had this?

Hi there! I know how nerve-wracking it can be to notice any changes, especially in the early weeks. From the start of my 6th week, I had on and off spotting too. It was really unsettling at first, but my doctor assured me that light spotting, especially if it's brown, is often normal and not a cause for concern. I carried my first baby to full term even with the spotting.
It's always best to check in with your healthcare provider for peace of mind, but try not to stress too much if it's just light spotting and not heavy bleeding. Cramping can also be normal as your body adjusts. Hang in there, and take care. Sending positive thoughts your way! xx
Fingers crossed it seems like there hasn’t been any since, just one tiny brown speck that one time, so I’m really hoping it’s just a natural part of the process…
But yeah, it was certainly unsettling.
The full picture was actually that I was at a funeral yesterday, a very upsetting close one and I only wore a pad as I had to do my pessary just before it, so I noticed the brown spot at the wake after and it was more obvious because of the pad, I could have possibly missed it in a different circumstance. It really flustered me for the whole afternoon .
Gosh this process can be soooo hard. I’m so hoping that it turns out ok… wait and hope and wait and wait, so much waiting. Just gotta keep going and trying to stay on top of it all.
Your message has been really reassuring so thank you, I’ve also messaged my clinic so I will see what they say.
You're very welcome. I'm glad to hear there hasn’t been any more spotting. Fingers crossed it was just a one-time thing. I'm so sorry to hear about the funeral.
Pessaries can sometimes cause spotting, so maybe it’s related to that. Take good care of yourself and hang in there. All the best. x
I’ve just had quite a reassuring message from my clinic, here is an extract incase any of you stumble upon this post also in search of some possible explanations and reassurance. I haven’t had any more brown discharge spots so big fingers crossed this is just all part of the process:
“From the photo, the bleeding looks very minimal, so I wouldn't be concerned about this, we do have quite a few ladies who experience some bleeding at this early stage, possibly because using the pessaries causes slight irritation on the cervix which can be the source of the bleeding an nothing to do with the pregnancy at all.”
So fingers crossed that is what’s happened to me. I will keep you posted x
As everyone else said and the clinic too, brown spotting is not a tremendous cause of concern. If they think it’s because of the cervix, you could use the progesterone rectally and avoid intercourse, that’s the usual advice.
I have had quite a few drops of dark brown blood during my 2ww and then constant brown spotting until week 6+2when I had red bleeding with big clots and even then all was still fine and could still see the heartbeat. Just a subchorionic haematoma which is very common in IVF. Now I’m week 7+4 and still spotting brown. So don’t stress too much about it but always check with your clinic and if you’re concerned about anything, you can go directly to your local EPU and they’ll most likely see you and scan you on the day.
Cramps are also pretty normal if they’re small and they come & go, and especially if you’ve had a fresh transfer, as it can take a while for the ovaries to come down.
I’m really sorry for your loss but hope that this little bundle will bring you lots of joy in your life! Xx
Yes, we’ve all learned the hard way that the stress doesn’t end with a BFP 🤦🏻♀️ but it gets a little bit easier with every passing week. Do you have a viability scan booked soon? That will be the first milestone and fingers crossed for you that all goes well and you can breathe easier for at least one day.
If it helps, my clinic counsellor (which I would recommend you try as well if you want to talk to someone) said to always focus on the facts at hand (in your case if you had strong lines on the pregnancy test that would mean a healthy hcg, light cramping is also a good sign, any other pregnancy symptoms you have etc) and when you think “what if this won’t work” to balance that thought with “but what if it will work?” to bring it more in the middle.
