Am I likely to have a freeze all cycle?

I’m currently going through a round of IVF and had my baseline scan yesterday, they counted a total of 28 immature follicles with the potential to be stimulated when I start my injections . Just wondered if I’m likely to be advised to freeze any embryos we get due to an increased risk of OHHS? Last time they collected 12 eggs so I was able to go ahead with a fresh transfer, how many eggs is too many eggs? If you were advised a ‘freeze all’, how many eggs did you have collected?

Hope everybody is doing okay in their journeys and staying strong! Lots of luck to you all.

I am not sure but I think it's usually closer to 20 eggs ? They monitor your estrogen levels and there is a cut-off level for fresh transfer. At least that's what my old clinic did. I had 27 follicles in one baseline scan and had to have a freeze all due to estrogen levels although I was older and had 16 eggs

If you're using the same protocol as last time an indication would be how many follicles did you have then at the baseline scan? Obviously it's just an indication as each cycle is different.

I had 10 follicles last time at baseline scan which turned into 16 when I went for collection so a fair bit lower than this time round, but I am on a different stims injection this time too. They didn’t mention it at my baseline but I just want to prepare myself if I’m likely to have to wait a couple more months for a transfer.

Thank you for your reply!

Counting follicles at baseline scan can be quite subjective. Some nurses/sonographers can be very pedantic and detailed whilst others don't pay that much attention to every little follicle. You might also respond very well on the medications. You will 0nly find out as the following scans start during stimulation .

My clinic opted for freeze all if 15+ eggs were collected, but I imagine different clinics have different protocols. Best of luck!

We had 24 follicles, 16 collected, 9 mature, 3 fertilised and were able to have a fresh transfer x

That’s great thank you! I’ll just have to wait and see what the numbers do, just already completely different to my first cycle.

I think I had 22 follicles so opted for freeze all, egg collected-26- 11 embryos to freeze. That was my second collection with a low AMH! My first collection also freeze all- 28 eggs & 7 embryos. I’d go with a freeze all if advised, the bloating was awful & I think if you do get pregnant immediately it can be quite dangerous, plus frozen have slightly better success rates I believe. Good luck xx

This is what I was thinking, although the waiting is so hard and ideally I don’t want to delay, I also want it I have the best chance at working so could be best to let my body rest and have a better chance with a frozen! Thank you xx

its 20+ eggs collected for freeze all at my clinic and/or if hormone levels in your blood are too high. At this stage it’s hard to tell though as all follicles might respond or only some so the next week or so will tell you more 🤗 good luck with it all! Xx

That’s what I was thinking, and they won’t all have eggs in them too so will have to wait and see what happens. It’s all of the waiting and wondering that I struggle with the most! Thank you 🥰

It really is I’m so impatient at the best of times but every step of this stuff feels like it takes forever lol xx

I’m exactly the same! And don’t like it all being out of my control either 😂 xx

My clinic draws the line at 16 eggs. I had 32 follicles, 22 eggs collected, we did a freeze all and I am glad for it because I developed OHSS. Very best of luck with your egg collection, I hope you get many embies :)

Sounds like every clinic has a different cut off then! I’ll have to ask at my next scan and see what their cut off is, the main thing is getting those embies 🥰 thank you x

How long did you have to wait for your FET with developing OHSS?

Eloquentia profile image
Eloquentia in reply toSunshine1312

No longer than the usual amount - the OHSS went away with my first bleed post IVF, then I had to wait for my first normal period to start treatment. So with egg collection in early May, I had my first FET mid-August.

That’s good to know that it doesn’t delay things more, I will have to see how my journey plays out, thank you 🥰

You are welcome. Fingers crossed you don't get OHSS! My consultant advised protein-rich diet to help avoid it and then, deal with it. I was on protein shakes/yoghurts 3-4 times a day when I developed it plus electrolyte drinks.

When did you start the protein-rich diet? From egg collection or sooner?

The clinic advised on protein rich diet in the lead up to egg collection. They told me to ramp it up with protein yoghurts and shakes a few times a day when they diagnosed the OHSS.

we chose to be on the safe side and decided to be freeze all beforehand and so used the trigger that reduces chance of OHSS but means you have to have freeze all. Honestly it’s better to let your body heal a bit if you are collecting lots of eggs etc. I did freeze all when I collected both 15 and 17 eggs on different rounds. I did have like 40 follicles though.

Good luck!

I’ll see what they advise at my next scan, just want to do whatever gives me the best chance at success! Thank you 🥰

Hi, I think it's all depends on your hormone levels, the first few days I was doing great and at first they counted around 20 follicles, but on the 5th day of stims my hormones skyrocket and I had around 30 follicles so I had to trigger to freeze all, I think they collected 27 eggs in total

Sunshine1312 profile image
Sunshine1312 in reply toGlaedy

Wow that’s a lot! An how long did you have to wait to have your transfer?

Glaedy profile image
Glaedy in reply toSunshine1312

I had to have the withdrawal bleed which kind of doesn't count as a cycle, and we started prep for FET from the next bleed. So with timeline I had egg collection on 20.11, withdrawn bleed on the 26.11, then my cycle got really unbalanced and I ovulated late and got my period on 01.01 and from then we transfered on 16.01 so realistically you can look for transfer 6-8 weeks from egg collection. But it all depends on your body etc
