HSG tube check before IUI?

Hello everyone,

While I am waiting for the first IVF appointment, I cannot stop thinking, that I never checked tubes before IUI, and that could be also a reason for failures.

I wonder if anyone who has gone through IUI did a tube checking before a procedure?

I am horrified on reading how painful this procedure is, same time I do not think I have done enough and should of checked the tubes first. My doctor said that with my age (40) is most likely not an issue..

Would be so helpful to hear others experiences with this.

Thank you in advance x

Originally I was going to do IUI so they check for the tubes to make sure that there was no obstruction.

I was warn over and over that it was going to be painful ......so I was afraid......and in my case it wasn't painful.

It was painful for me, I had cocodamol before. But it was totally worth it.

Hi I did HSG and yes it might be slightly painful. I felt more stronger pressure than anything but I do bear pain very well. I didn't take any painkillers before or after but this depends how you can cope with pain. I would strongly suggested to go for it.

I had tubes checked as standard in the nhs before they decided which course of treatment was suitable. Its a really quick procedure so not sure why they haven’t done it however I’ve had 6 egg collections, 6x IUI, 15 (or more lost count lol) transfers, 3 miscarriages, over 100 scans and it’s still the procedure I hated most but it might also be because it was my first one! It was o my painful in the moment like strong period cramping and didn’t last long. Ps at 40 I would seriously consider going straight to IVF and egg collection as success rates are much higher xx

I had a thought and definitely in for IVF (I have to do privately) just not so much to collect from me. I only produce 1 follicle a cycle, which seem to grow well (to 20mm) with stimulation, will give one more try IUI after checking tubes. My huge hope is for that one egg 🥰 xx

Honestly I didn't feel any pain when I did the tube check before my IUI. The only thing I could feel was cold water running in my body. To me, it was easier than a monitoring scan. Everyone is different I guess. Good luck x

It's painful yes, but the pain literally lasted a few seconds . Slight pain, similar to period cramps when the tubes were inserted ( I've a very low tolerance tho, even smears are uncomfortable) and a pressure pain when dye in injected. The pain for me literally lasted 10 seconds and is nothing compared to the pain of childbirth or recovery

P.s I didn't have any painkillers before. My hospital did advise paracetamol but I was vomiting on the journey so couldn't take them. I had some light bleeding on and off for few hours

I was advised to have a HSG before iui, but wasn't compulsory, I went for one and they found my left tube was blocked and the right was slow at filling, so potentially blocked too. So glad I did it on the end. I didn't find it painful, just a little uncomfortable.

I think unfortunately some people struggle with pain and some people hardly feel it. I had it done last year and could just feel a cold sensation but it wasn't painful at all whereas my best friend had it done and said it was really painful.

Quick update:

I have done a tube check and it was not painful at all. I did take paracetamol an hour before the test and just tried to relax as much as I could. It was uncomfortable as the doctor could not insert the catheter at first, but otherwise, it was all good. The right is fully open and the left one.. well they could not see if it was blocked or not.
