Coming off IVF meds

Good morning ladies, Approaching my 12th week this Friday. Have been told to come off all meds (except the steroids)

I am really nervous. Doctors are saying the placenta takes over between 10-12 weeks but how do they know that? I had a scan last Thursday (before intralipids) and all was ok. I have another this Friday. I have always had low progesterone so don’t want to come off my prontogest! I feel like if I stop, the fetus will stop growing..

Advice please….

Morning Leo, I came off mine at 12 weeks but I know some clinics to do it as early as 8-10 weeks so you should definitely be in the safe zone but do speak to your clinic about your worries. I remember being a couple of days short of progesterone due to having to replace a few pessaries along the way and my clinic reassured me that it would be ok.

Call your clinic, they may prescribe more if you feel too anxious to stop or they'll explain how the placenta has taken over.

Sending love! x

hello leo1980, I can totally understand your concerns as I had the exact same 😌

During the first weeks of pregnancy my progesterone was low so I was on daily Prontogest + daily Cyclogest (2x day). I stopped ALL medications at 12 weeks - I went cold turkey - and my baby is absolutely fine and healthy.

You’ll be fine 💙

If you’re too concerned though, speak with your clinic and agree on a plan. Good luck!! 💙💙

When I came off the meds, my symptoms/sickness/mood instantly got better. I get it’s nerve wracking but as others have said, your placenta is formed and will take over. You got this. Xxx

I asked my clinic as I am due to stop in a few weeks and they said I could have stopped at 6 weeks and continuing is just a precaution x

thank you!

I am just concerned I generally have low progesterone which could have adverse effects. Going to suggested a phased approach more for my anxiety!

I was scared too, I forgot to take one or two pessariesba few times in the last couple of weeks so ended up having a few that I could use to phase myself off them, it was absolutely fine in the end! All the best x

I felt exactly the same. My clinic told me that the placenta would have been making all the necessary hormones for a few weeks now and if the baby is growing as it should the placenta is definitely doing its job. I stopped progesterone and oestrogen on Sunday and all seems fine. I also instantly felt less tired!x

My clinic weaned me off my meds from 12 weeks before completely 14 weeks. They reduced my progesterone from 800 mg to 400mg and Prognova from 10mg to 2mg. Maybe something to ask your clinic about x

Hi Leo1980, I was told to wean off steroids at 12 weeks, dropping 5mg every 5 days from 25mg to zero. I stopped Lubion injections at 12 weeks, but I was told to continue taking 2 cyclogest just before bed until 16 weeks. I am also dreading coming off them. Best of luck.

agree with most below - I also came off everything at 12 weeks and all been fine so far (now at 37 weeks). If you have doubt about your progesterone, I would speak to your doctor and ask for their opinion. Can you taper? Or get a blood test after coming off? Anything to help ease anxiety (which is already super high for us IVFers). Good luck!

I had exactly the same concerns and wrote a post about it. But I stopped cold turkey at 12 weeks just after they had seen the placenta and told me all looks good.

Just had 32 week scan and all is looking good!

It’s so hard not to worry after IVF but I just had to trust the medical team who had got me to this position in the first place.

I hear 12 weeks is on the late side and you can technically come off them weeks earlier.

Silver lining, I felt so much better as well once I stopped the meds! Good luck xx

I was very very worried about that issue. The doctors told me that it depended on the previous dose (and mine was very high), since a drastic drop in progesterone levels in the endometrium, even if they were "enough" to maintain a pregnancy, could cause bleeding and that had already happened to me previously.

I finally did it gradually over two - three weeks, without problem. But it was probably my particular case (previous bleeding...) and most people have no problem stopping completely at week 12.

Good luck!!!! 🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀

Thank you for this. This is what I was thinking too and I had bleeding at week 8! So doctor has decided I stay on the meds and we gradually come off it which has eased my anxiety a little bit. I will post a bit later to thank everyone for their support, it’s been really helpful!
