Delaying Treatment

Hi all,

I’ve been waiting to start IVF this month. We’ve had to go privately because my BMI is just under 35. I’ve been working to get it down significantly and was on track to start this month. I’ve been so down about everything and really looking forward to getting started. My partner has epilepsy and we checked with his doctor that the meds he was on were safe for pregnancy. We were told they were for men, just strongly advised against women taking them.

Today after ordering our meds and having our appointment scheduled for our planning appointment he got a letter from his doctor saying there’s been changes and he needs to come off the meds and they strongly don’t advise trying to conceive on them.

I’m gutted because I don’t see a way our fertility doctor will be able to advise us to continue now with him taking this and also because it’s highly stressed changing meds with the risk of seizures.

We’ve cancelled a holiday to do this cycle and taken time off work and I was pinning so much on just starting this new process (knowing it might not work) to try and get one step closer and I feel like it’s just been taken away from me for another 4 months.

I’m absolutely gutted. Can anyone offer some words of support or guidance. I’d be very grateful.

I am so sorry. It is absolutely gutting to have a cycle cancelled at short notice with factors out of your control. I’ve been there and it felt like a loss in itself. I’m sorry.

I hate toxic positivity but I guess sometimes reframing that it’s good it was realised before you started so you can now address things. When I had a cycle cancelled I used the time to really optimise our diet and lifestyle and do a course of acupuncture so that I could feel I used the time to the max and feel it was useful time that would boost our chances.
