Internal scan

I've booked my first scan in and I'm really apprehensive about this. It's a baseline scan so the first step to treatment. I'm wishing to be a solo mother by choice. Can anyone tell me their experiences of first internal scan please

What would you like to know?

A transvaginal scan is fine, it's painless.

Thankyou for this. Just a fear of the unknown I think :-)

Hi, I’m SMBC too. It’s an exciting journey! Once the first scan is out of the way you will be fine. It’s just the fear of the unknown. Should be painless and I’d take it over a smear any day! You’ll soon wonder what you were worried about - you soon get used to all the prodding, poking, tests, and or just becomes the norm! 🙈 Good luck and welcome to the club!

I've been so apprehensive this week. I'm going to have some diazepam before my scan to help me relax. I have Asperger's and I find things like this so tough, but it will be worth it.

Hopefully once you know exactly what it entails next time you’ll be fine. Relaxing will make it so much easier so that sounds like a good idea. Honestly after you’ll be yep now I know I can do this! You got this! 💪🏻

It’s absolutely fine! It doesn’t hurt at all & also doesn’t take too long.

Totally understand your apprehension, but as others have said, it's nothing to worry about at all.

It does feel a little invasive at first and a little daunting not knowing what to expect, but it is honestly easier than a smear test and totally pain free. You just lie on a bed, put your legs up in and that's it.

The doctors do these day in day out, so they've seen it all and try to make you as comfortable as possible.

Good luck with your journey to solo motherhood! 🤗 X

Just echoing what everyone has said it's not painful or even especially uncomfortable in my experience. I remember being very anxious before my first one too and had the idea it was going to be quite sore but afterwards thinking hmm is that all?! And the clinic will know it's your first and be very sensitive to that and talk you through it all. Defo less uncomfortable than a smear. As others say you they then become second nature. Very best of luck on your journey, wishing you every success!

Not painful at, just a bit of cold jelly on the wand. It can be quite interesting to see the images on the screen while they point things out.

Hi Running4u, it is absolutely fine. What you will be imagining is so much worse than the reality. I suffer from really painful periods and get pain during smears. I was absolutely terrified, especially with it being day one of my cycle and the period pain, but it was absolutely fine. Not sore, just a little uncomfortable. I would just tell the nurse it is your first scan and that you are nervous and they will act accordingly. You can even ask to insert the probe yourself if that helps. Good luck!
