Internal scan found PCOS - Any advice.....

I've just been for my transvaginal scan on cycle day 5 and the consultant has found that one of my ovaries - as she put it is 'Slightly Polysistic' the other one is absolutely fine and no concerns with it!

This has shocked me a little - I am well under weight for my age and apart from the slight irregular period every few months I have no other symptoms. I know I am very fortunate having known the signs and symptoms many others get with PCOS, I'm just a little bit concerned that I could have done something to help had I have known many years ago!

Has anyone got any advice on fertility or health with PCOS any supplements, vitamins, dietary and general health advice would be great!

Also now don't know what will be happening for this next stage and treatment, will lengthen our process of treatment for IVF - has anyone else had this news and knows what will happen next?

Em x

Hi bibi_16 they never mentioned clomid to me they've gone straight for ICSI but this was before they scanned me today so I wonder if they will mention clinic to me next week. I eat quite a low sugar diet anyway and am fairly fortunate I don't put weight on so must be doing something right already! Thanks for the advice

I had the same diagnosis on my first transvaginal ultrasound last September. I even had a small cyst on my left ovary (which dispersed by itself). My only signs are that my period is always very light so I seem to have a naturally thin lining (but my period is regular) and I've always had bad acne, since about age 14 (I'm 37 now) which flares up around ovulation and my period. I also had a miscarriage when I was 28 but they couldn't say if that was related.. I was prescribed something called Inofolic at the clinic which is a powder you mix with water twice a day. It contains myo inositol and folic acid. However I found it much cheaper to buy a myo inositol supplement and folic acid separately.

As for treatment itself there was no problems and I was regularly checked for ovary cysts (luckily I didn't get any more). During stims though you maybe at higher risk of OHSS but you will be closely monitored for that..

In regards to diet we should be eating a low carb, low sugar diet. This is because we're at higher risk of type 2 diabetes and not being able to shift weight so easily due to the way our bodies digest foods. I took it very seriously when I found out and I was so so miserable that I decided to relax the rules a little after getting a bfn. At least I'm happier now. 😊

Hi tugsgirl, it's a bit of a shock some months I do have very heavy periods and they are painful some months no pain at all and fairly normal which now makes sense that it's only the one ovary with PCOS, I take folic acid but will ask at my next appointment about inofolic.

I thought it might cause OHSS at EC I'll make sure I drink plenty and look after myself!

My diet is pretty healthy I eat everything in moderation and I do eat quite a low sugar low carb diet already so I must be doing something right, I barely put weight on so I'm fortunate in a sense that I eat the right diet!

Thanks for the advice!

I eat chocolate every day. I'm very bad too. I do eat a balanced meal with veg every evening though. I drink sugar free drinks and I've cut down on sugar in tea and coffee (which is decaf). I put myself on a super strict diet after finding out but I was so so so miserable 😕 I'm not eating so healthily now but I am happier 😊

Its quite a shock and overwhelming when they just slip it into the conversation, they have told me not to worry about it, but that of course makes it worse, i've looked into diet and i'm very fortunate i don't drink sugary drinks have stopped drinking tea, and have minimal amounts of dairy and processed food, i do like chocolate though so not giving it up, looks like all these years i've been on the diet i should be on anyway, still concerns me that its only the one ovary and will the other one end up the same at some point!

I think to be unhappy being strict on yourself is not going to help, i'm glad you've found a happy medium and still feel well with it.

I will try and bee more carefull what i eat. I have untell may to improve my diet and weight. And i will only be drinking decaf and sugar free drinks. Its nice to hear u r happy. And hope that everything goes well.xx

I think everything in moderation is fine, otherwise being strict and restricting yourself too much will make anyone unhappy which is no good! I hope everything goes well from this point too, i'm now looking into acupuncture as apparently it helps regulate the hormones to help with fertility. Hope everything goes well for you from now until May.
