Progesterone

Hi ladies. I'm 13 weeks pregnant, IVF was a success after the second attempt. I've got a bit of a problem with progesterone pessaries. I've been told by the IVF consultant to stop at 12 weeks but then I didn't know how. Every other day or cold turkey? But I have since been moved over to a midwife who said ask at ultrasound and I forgot so I called the ultrasound department and they said they didn't know and why would the sonographer know that. So I feel like I've no one to ask. Can anyone please help? Thanks

Hello - I have not got to that date but my successful fellow fertility-warrior friend went cold turkey. Can you ask your IVF consultant/clinic?

I can try to go back to them. I've been moved over to the normal GP surgery but maybe they will help again. Thanks

The placenta takes over 8-12 weeks of pregnancy so maybe you gradually stop them - as you say every 2nd day and so on Your body will only absorbs what it needs Also are you aware there is a Pregnancy Support Forum that could give you information and support

Thank you. I'll have a look for that x

Not from experience. But for peace of mind I would probably cut the dose in half for a week or so before stopping x

hi ScoobieGang ❤️ I personally stopped everything cold turkey at 12weeks (progesterone pessaries and injections + oestrogens patches). I ’d still call your IVF consultant to double check

Hi, finally got some help from IVF clinic. Just said to stop them because the placenta has taken over now. That's a relief x

Hi Scoobie,

I was in the same position as you- wasn’t too sure if I should stop cold turkey or not. I was on many more medications and was worried! But I did as I was told, ended up having severe headaches for a few weeks other than that, everything was fine!

Take care

i went from 2 to 1 at 12 weeks then stopped about 10 days after that ( I was told to finish the packet). I assume the midwife suggested a scan to look at how well developed your placenta is …

I'm not sure what they looked at in the scan. I had a trainee. No one separate to the IVF department seemed to have the foggiest! And I'm not really sure how much the IVF department cares. They were like that all the way through so this has made all medications a worry really. They were puzzled how on earth I'd even got pregnant. Hundreds of pregnant women at the hospital but not as many doing IVF. It feels quite lonely but hoping it passes the further along I get. Thanks for your input x

Hi Scoobie

I weaned myself off it. So instead of three a day I took two and then had a supply for longer than 12 weeks. My clinic advised that and it made me feel better as well. By 16 weeks I had no supply. Remember the placenta develops in those first few weeks so it’s probably not needed after 12 weeks but for me more psychological. Worked out for me after two cycles currently putting my 3 month old to bed. Goodluck!!

hey so I am IVF with progesterone pessaries, I was on 3 a day and leading up to my 12week scan i did 2 a day for 4 days, then down to 1 a day for 3 days and then that was me done! Clinic said once I had 12 week scan I could come off them

Hi! I am also taking progesterone: 200 mg x 3 times a day (tot. 600mg), on week 12 they told me to take only 1 pill a day (200 mg only), and on week 13 one pill every other day. Then nothing on week 14. Hope it helps :)

Your OB would be the best person to ask. I am 13weeks as well, at 12 weeks I started slowing down to every other day to now every two days until I run out which should be mid week 14 next week.
