I would like to know from some of you who had the surgical management D&C after miscarriage, when do you feel your body is ok for normal life? I have a D&C booked on 5th of Jan. I have an important meeting need to travel of 2 hours plane. Not sure whether I will be able to attend on 10th (5 days after D&C). Sometimes I feel it is so hard for a working mum who is also undergoing the ivf treatment for a sibling. It is so hard to balance the treatment and work. Don’t know whether it is possible to travel by plane after 5 days. Any advice is welcome.
Also, how long your period is back to normal after D&C?
Thanks 🙏

I had to do D&C due to delayed miscarriage in March, I was in a lot of pain for about 7-10 after, I wasn’t so well emotionally so maybe impacted my pain and everything else, was bleeding as well.
Hello. I’m so sorry for your loss and the emotional rollercoaster of it all.
I didn’t have a full D&C but had surgical management via hysteroscopy as there were retained produced of conception, so this may not be totally comparable.
I felt woozy the day after the procedure due to the anaesthetic. I continued to bleed / spot the week after but wasn’t in any pain, so was able to get up and about.
My emotions were still quite all over the place, though, likely due to the changing hormones, so that’s something to watch out for too!
Sorry for what you're going through. I had a D&C earlier this year when I was around 10 weeks and by that stage I was really unwell and it was booked in urgently. This may sound awful but I felt better almost as soon as I came round - a bit drowsy from the general anaesthetic but hardly any bleeding and no pain at all, and after a good sleep that night I was fine physically and was able to lift and play with my 1 year old - I think partly because I'd been so unwell and my womb was full of fluid/blood, plus possibly had an infection, when it was all removed it was literally like a weight lifted. I ovulated 3 weeks later and had a period 2 weeks after, so only about a week delayed and my cycles went straight back to normal. But the emotional side of things was another story - that hit me like a tonne of bricks a couple of weeks after the surgery and I cried all the time at anything, it was like grief is all I can compare it to, which I guess in a way is what it is, but it's mainly the hormone crash. So just have support around you for the next few weeks and months and cry as much as you need. Otherwise, in terms of the procedure I was meant to be given meds to soften my cervix the night before but they forgot(!) and had to manually dilate - despite that I felt fine. And I was terrified of what the meds would be like that cause the body to expel and can bring on contractions but they just made me shake a bit and that was it. So even though it was a horrible thing to go through overall, I think the surgery was the best worst option for me. I hope it's straightforward for you too and sending you strength x
Hi lovely, so sorry for your loss. I too chose surgical management as I felt that was the best decision for me and it was.
The hospital were great and for the first week or so it was light bleeding. I didn’t have any pain apart from 1 night a few days after the op and it was intense cramping. Paracetamol and a hot water bottle helped a lot but it definitely took me by surprise and then nothing after.
For me it was definitely the emotional side that was the hardest. The first few days were hard but I slowly started to build myself back up.
So sorry you’re having to go through this lovely. Like others have said, I was drowsy with some cramping for 24 hours but then just had some spotting for a few days but no pain, so I was back to pretty much normal life a couple of days after the procedure.
My period came back the following month and was relatively normal, however my period the month after that was MENTAL. It came out of nowhere and was like it all came out in one day, a huge heavy bleed on day one (TMI but thank god I was at home because it was so heavy it trickled down my leg and out of my pyjamas bottoms!). Then the next 4-5 days were just really light bleeding. Following that though everything seemed to go back to normal.
Really hope all goes ok for you and sending loads of love and luck for the rest of your journey. It’s an absolute rollercoaster. Xx
I am so sorry to hear your news. It’s so scary isn’t it. I had the surgical management 2 days before Christmas and was absolutely fine. Physically and emotionally - left the uk to go skiing on boxing day 3 days post surgery. I come from medical family so I understand the science and process so wasn’t emotionally distressed just disappointed. Physically First day was sore and bloated. I just got home from hospital took a naproxen, hot chocolate in bed with a hot water bottle, next morning up at 5.15 to walk the dog with only a little spotting. Sending much love ❤️ I know it’s daunting, you are stronger than you know
Thank you so much for your advice. I Hope i can be the same as you after the D&C. So far I feel ok mentally because I kind of know the causes of miscarriage and my doctor already talked to me about treatment for next time. I just hope physically I won’t feel too much pain.
They gave me a tablet to take 2 hours before surgery. Inserted vaginally. No pain just at exactly 2 hours I felt a contraction. Not painful just a squeeze as then I started to bleed a little as they wheeled me off. It was uncomfortable after the procedure but I took strong painkillers. And really relaxed (the hot water bottle did help) as well as a good nights sleep. Just make yourself comfortable- baggy clothes, warm socks, food ready just in case you don’t want to do much, books, your favourite tv programs all lined up. Kindness is key. You got this!
