repeat hysteroscopy?

hey all, so sorry for posting so much - everyone’s so helpful 🫶🏻

I had a hysteroscopy 4 years ago that came back normal. Is it worth repeating it? It’s almost £2k, but I am so reluctant to not do any tests before our next transfer. Sorry if I’m going on, but just want to cover all basis xx

After two early losses on IVF I asked my consultant what else we could check before doing another transfer and he said a 3D aquascan to check the structure of the womb. But then when he realised I'd had a hysteroscopy before he said hysteroscopy was the 'gold standard' and if I'd had that I didn't need the aquascan. I said it was done about 20 years ago(!) and he said it didn't need repeating as it would have shown up any major structural abnormalities - I guess he was thinking abnormal shape, or things I was born with, and maybe all the other routine monitoring scans I was having show more recent and temporary things like polyps etc. I'd ask your consultant though as that's just what I was told and there could be very specific reasons - e.g., I'd had a repeat laporoscopy about six years before IVF which has come back clear (although possibly the latter looks at the abdomen and not inside the womb, can remember).

Thank you! That’s generally what I’ve been told too, and I’ve had more scans with different consultants than I can remember and nothing has been picked up. Maybe for this next transfer it’s not worth the additional £2k 🫠😬 xx

Hey, I recently had a repeat hysteroscopy after three failed transfers between then and the previous hysteroscopy just to see if there were any new issues. They found I had an infection and adhesions which needed to be sorted. May have been a contributing factor to the BFNs so I’m glad I got it sorted, so should be much better for my next transfer 🤞

I am glad I did it, but like you said it’s such a huge amount of money, everything to do with this is 🤯

Thanks @yellow83 - Oh wow, so interesting that was picked up in your second procedure - just goes to show it was worth it in your case. Did they have any suspicion that something may be flagged? Like anything from your internal scans? My consultant tells me I’d be wasting my money as she’s sure it’ll be clear. Wishing you lots of luck with your next transfer X

No not really, I hadn’t felt great for ages but just put that down to the many drugs etc, but it was mostly down to the three BFNs, one tested and two donor ones so they thought they should look again before doing any more transfers and potentially wasting more embryos. I’m having treatment in Spain and they like to be thorough.

I’d also trust your consultant though, as depends on your history etc xx

Hello, I hope you don’t mind me imposing on this conversation. I had a laparoscopy and hysteroscopy almost 2 years ago, the hysteroscopy was normal. My clinic are suggesting a hysteroscopy as like you, I’ve had 3 failed transfers since the last one. Do you mind me asking how long in between each of your hysteroscopies? Thank you. X

Hey, it was just over a year between the first two. I’ve also recently had a third which was about five months after my second. The third one showed that everything was clear again so that was reassuring. X

I think it's unlikely they will find anything on a hysteroscopy, it's usually congenital things that you would have been born with and so would have been seen on the previous one. If you wanted some reassurance, I've read and been told that a 3D ultrasound shows up most things a hysteroscopy would, and is much cheaper. I had a 3D scan which was normal, told hysteroscopy would be unlikely to show anything, I had it anyway and it was normal. So I think 3D ultrasound might be a much cheaper and equally reassuring procedure to look into xxx

Thanks HedgehogMad - is a 3D ultrasound the internal ultrasound? Not sure I’ve heard of it. I think I am ultimately just seeking reassuring before our FET, weirdly part of my brains hates to accept ‘bad luck’ 😬 x
