Hi! I had one last February and was put under a general anaesthetic for it. Was a bit sore with lower back ache and a tiny bit of blood afterwards but not too bad. Just be aware that with a GA you can get constipation afterwards so make sure you have plenty of water after and sip as much as you're allowed before you're put under.

Good luck xx

Thanks for your reply.

I’m surprised my clinic as mentioned sedative or anaesthetic. As lot of people say painful. All it states is take paracetamol 2 before procedure, which am guessing means no sedative or anaesthetic given. Hope not! X

I have my hysteroscopy on Tuesday, im not under GA. They just said to take some paracetamol before, im not worried about the pain because I deliberately didn’t read or watch anything about it so im relatively calm, it may change on the day 🙄. I will update you if you like

Thanks. I like to know what to expect. It makes you wonder why some places they give a GA & some not. Must be cost of GA out clinics are tight n saving on then.

Please do let me know. X

I’ve had 2 hysteroscopy’s, 1 under GA and 1 without. I would take some paracetamol about an hr before, I wouldn’t say it was painful as such but it was uncomfortable in places. I made the mistake of trying to get up to quickly after they’d finished and got a bit light headed so had to lay down again with a fan on, maybe take a cereal bar in your bag Incase that happens. I had quite a bit of bleeding after so was glad I’d booked the day off work. Good luck x

Were both the one with GA & without it in the same clinic? If you had another one and they gave option to choose would you have a GA or not. Would you?

Thanks for the tip will take some protein or cereal bar to have afterwards x

Both at the same hospital but one was under the gynaecology team and one under my fertility team.

Tbh I probably wouldn’t although there were pros to GA as in there was less bleeding, I still felt rough after it from the anaesthetic and I found the waiting all day to go into theatre more stressful. I feel like I’d just be more prepared now to have it without, as long as you can go home and rest after that’s the main thing I’d say x

I refused to have mine done without any anaesthetic even if it was just a sedative! I had mine done under GA.

I have endometriosis & even simple pelvic examinations are agony for me.

The hospital respected my choice & offered another laparoscopy as my endo symptoms had returned. Most women at my hospital have it without any anaesthetic or sedative ; but you can insist on anaesthetic.

Your know your body & you know what you can cope with pain wise.

Good luck with it ❤️xoxo

Thanks Jess for the advice.. I guess you are right we as individual know our bodies n pain threshold.

I might give them a call this week & ask for sedative n see what they say X

They said I might feel some "discomfort" but I got pretty bad cramps. I wish I had known to take paracetamol beforehand as that probably would have sorted it. They gave me a painkiller after and then I was fine. Use a panty liner in case any residual dye leaks out afterwards. I didn't have any bleeding.

Best of luck with it xxx

So am guessing no sedative then? X

Hello, please don’t worry, I found it a bit uncomfortable but I didn’t take any paracetamol so definitely take some an hour before. I found it a really quick procedure. I kept saying in my head, it will all be over with and I’ll be home before I know it and I was. Take plenty of sanity towels as the ones they leave you with aren’t the best. Hope this helps 😀 x

Thanks Jen..hope mine is as painless as yours, was it like a scan or smear test uncomfortable type feeling or more? X

I did not have any meds at all. I even went back to work afterwards and I felt completely fine. I just had a bit of discomfort during the insertion. The nurse told me not to read about how painful it is because for most people it is not true although for some it unfortunately is.

good luck xx

Thanks Hun, hope I am like you in terms of pain threshold, did they take a sample out when did your hysteroscopy? X

Hello,

I had it done last year and I was given a general anesthetic. Light bleeding for a few days after. Recovered very quickly. Nothing to worry about :)

Good luck and have a great day,

Anna

Most places try to do hysteroscopy with no anaesthetic which most women seem to tolerate well. I had one but due to them knowing they would treat if they found anything, mine was done under GA so I cant really help.xx

Thanks Hun,Just wish they were providing me a GA. x

Hi mine was fine under GA, the problem i had was the next period after which was pretty bad, but i might have endo which might have made it worse..

Hi Fareena. Thanks for posting this question. I have to have one to remove a polyp and have also been wondering about pain/sedation. I have a gynae appointment on 26 Jan, but as yet, I don't know if this is just to assess, or if they are actually going to do the hysteroscopy on that day. What has the process been for you so far? How much advance warning have you had?

Hi

My appointment isn’t till the 30th. But mine is to assess using the hysteroscopy.

Am guessing yours they will be doing the same. What does it state in your letter?

Read alsorts on the net some stating it is painful & others were given GA/ sedation. so am worried slightly as my letter states just take paracetamol, which implies no sedation giving.

As yours is before mine let me know how it goes.. X

Thanks for reply. I know I was being referred for hysteroscopy, but my letter just says appointment with consultant and bring a water sample. I'm hoping from what you've said that today is just to go over my notes before booking the procedure. I'll feel very unprepared otherwise. Haven't even got any paracetamol in the house!

How did you get on at your assessment? Mine was just an assessment too, and they told me to just take paracetamol for the procedure. She said 'Some people can find it painful.' Waiting for appointment now. Have you got yours? X

Just joining in as I am waiting for my hysteroscopy appointment too. I had an assessment at the gynae clinic last week (first time there as usually at the assisted conception unit) and they said I would be having a general anaesthetic. Didn’t appear to be any other choice! They have said they if they find anything then they will treat it at the same time so I’m guessing that’s why it’s under GA. Never had one before so I’m really nervous. Should be sometime in the next 5/6 weeks. Hope everyone else’s goes well.
