No period after provera

Hi all

I hope you're all as well as you can be on this emotional rollercoaster of a journey.

I was prescribed 5 days worth of provera by my fertility clinic, to induce a period so I could start my FET cycle. It's about the sixth time I've been given provera and usually it works. This time, however, 15 days after I took the last tablet and I've had no bleed. The clinic have booked me a scan for Friday afternoon but I'm so anxious as wasn't expecting this curveball.

I had two miscarriages previously but they passed without medical intervention so I don't think it's any scarring and all scans since have been fine.

Anyone else been in the same boat?

Thanks xx

I can't remember the time span but I know this happened to me with Provera. I was scanned, they gave me the Provera, said when the bleed would happen and it just didn't. I waited for another scan and in the interim the period did actually arrive but WAY after it was meant to with having had provera. I know it's so frustrating when you don't know why or what's going on. Hope you either start the Day 1 or the scan sheds some light for you x

Hi Skittles11, thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I really appreciate it. It's so anxiety inducing isn't it. And having to wait until Friday afternoon for a scan has made it worse. Was hoping they'd seemed tomorrow but they've classed it as an any time baseline scan so I'm not a priority. Thank you for your words of hope x

this happened to me with provera. Period turned up weeks later. Super frustrating. Northisterone always worked for me though if you can ask for that instead.

Hi Kittykat198, thanks so much for your message. Good to hear your period turned up eventually. Hope mine is the same. I had norehisterone once but it made me feel unwell so I've been on provera ever since. It normally works for me but no idea what's happened this time.

Hi lovely, not as drastic as yours but my period took 9 days to come after Provera. With Norethisterone it always came exactly 3 days after finishing, so I was expecting the same but no 😩. Hope they get you sorted quickly! Xx

Provera is awful but you need more than 5 days to induce a period. I would consider asking to take 5mg twice a day for much longer. Also after miscarriage, I was told to wait for a period. I had a period even though some tissue retained. I’m wondering if a 3d sis scan or hysteroscopy would be good to work out what is causing the delay. I’m sorry you’re going through this.

Hi Spicycurry, thanks for your message. I looked back at my records and usually I have been given 7 days of tablets and only once a day. I'm not sure why I was given 5 days this time. My last miscarriage was in January and had periods since then and also an unsuccessful FET cycle.

I'll ask about the 3d sis scan and hysterocopy. Thanks again x

Adding an update in case is helpful to anyone in a similar situation.I had a scan at the fertility clinic. As the medication I'd been given was progesterone it should have induced a period. From the scan they think me taking the tablets coincided with me ovulating and as such my body was producing progesterone itself and so this is why I've not had a bleed yet. They did a blood test which confirmed this. I have to wait for my period to start naturally and then I can start on oestrogen tablets and continue my Frozen Embryo Transfer cycle.
