Debating whether to have myomectomy

Hi there,

I have recently been advised to have a myomectomy in order to increase my chances of conceiving. I have three fibroids at the top of my uterus that appear to be removable through keyhole surgery. I'm debating whether to go ahead. I'm nearly 44 and feel that time is against me to start having children, but at the same time I want to try every option possible before deciding to stop.

Has anyone had a myomectomy before? What was your experience like, and did you end up being able to conceive?

We have been using donor eggs which we hope will also increase our chances.

hi  BeaMiss

I had three egg collections before a FET in April. The USS picked up a large fibroid at the back of the womb. The feeling was that it wasn’t affecting the cavity so a myomectomy was deemed not necessary- I had a hysteroscopy as well - which was normal. My consultant did a mock embryo transfer and it was straightforward so I was given the go ahead for a FET.

FET was very difficult- took 40 minutes or so, but I got pregnant. Unfortunately the fibroid grew in pregnancy and did indent the endometrial cavity and I lost my precious baby at 12 weeks in July.

I wish I had pushed for an MRI scan before transfer, it may have avoided some of the heartache, the NIPT was all low risk and baby was normal. They didn’t test the genetics of baby because in the UK - you have to have three miscarriages before they do this.

I’ve since had an MRI scan - which showed two fibroids inside the back wall of the uterus and I have had an open myomectomy.

Waiting three months and then hopefully having another transfer in December (I’m 44 now). Having a hysteroscopy and USS first to make sure everything is ok before transferring again.

If I were you, get on with egg collections. Freeze the embryos and then get an MRI scan. If needs be, get the fibroids removed as the hormones oestrogen and progesterone will probably cause the fibroid to grow if you conceive. Hopefully, once healed, do a FET and maybe this will save you a lot of heartache.

Wishing you all the best x
