I’ve been on my fertility journey for a while now and after our second round of ICSI we received our first positive pregnancy test on Wednesday.
I’ve been taking progesterone injections (Lubion) and pessaries (cyclogest) since egg collection. I’m aware that the progesterone causes bloating however, I’m concerned with the level of bloating I’ve been experiencing over the last few days.
I have gained 4 pounds in a few days (even though I’ve been eating half of what I usually eat) and the bloating starts from the very top of abdomen (just below my breasts). I get short of breath in the evening and find I’m hunched over because standing up straight seems to overstretch my stomach.
Is this normal at this stage? Will it get better on its own? I was wondering if there was anyone who had gone through a similar experience and could provide some reassurance.
Thanks

I’m not expert but that sounds very much like OHSS. I would defo speak to your doctor. I don’t think it will impact your baby but it can cause you lots of issues
Definitely what I’m thinking it is although when I’ve phoned the fertility team they have told me bloating is normal and to see how I get on. I just don’t think what I have is normal bloating so wanted to see if there were others out there who had experienced the same thing. Will give them another call and ask to be seen. Thanks x
Did you tell them about being short of breath? I’m bloated from egg retrieval etc but it very much lower abdomen. When I was examined the other day she commented that my upper abdomen is soft (and this was a good thing) if you lie down and press your tummy just below the ribs is it tight or is it hard? I hope someone else gets back to you soon with reassuring news 🙏🏻
Oh, and it might just go on its own but I would defo speak to your doctor. In the mean time you might find that drinking a lot of coconut water and getting your protein intake as high as possible helps. I’ve been obsessing about ohss recently (I don’t have it but am high risk) and these symptoms are in line with that.
I didn’t have an egg collection, but I got similar bloating as you have described starting from below my boobs to my tummy. That was from the drugs. I couldn’t even bear to put my bra on! It has settled a little. However, I was not short of breath or hunching over, so I would definitely speak to your clinic/doctor and push to be seen. All the best on your journey x
if this was a fresh transfer then I would definitely we keeping an eye on it and contacting your clinic as it is a warning sign of OHSS which can come on late when implantation is successful. Especially if you are having shortness of breath symptoms and if you are bloating substantially. Make sure you drink tonnes of electrolytes in fluids. And if it gets worse go to the hospital.
Hopefully it will die down though for you soon though and congratulations on your positive test!
