Injection Pain

Hi all,

My wife and I are now in our injection stage of our IVF and we’re on the third injection. I thought I was doing a good job so far but today she was in pain. I think I may have injected too quickly, has anyone else had this issue? She felt a sharp pain as I was injecting.

I feel awful about causing her this pain, I don’t want her to lose confidence in me.

Hi Jas I’m sure you will be doing a good job, try not to doubt that…but easier said than done! My partner does my injections and sometimes they hurt/sting a little and sometimes they don’t. Try different areas and try to locate a spot where it seems to glide in more comfortably for her. If it’s only the third one it might also improve as she/her body gets used to it. I’ve also read that some people rub an ice cube over the area before injecting to numb it so you could maybe try that. Wishing you both lots of luck xxx

Funny you should say this cos my husband does my injections and 9 times outta 10 it's fine ,that other one feels like he's putting a bloody dart in me and it stings for a good few minutes afterwards too.. he's not even doing anything different, but doesn't stop me calling him for doing it! I just think that maybe certain times our bodies tense up as we know what's coming and maybe that's the cause? Who knows but the injections aren't forever, so I just keep counting down the days til they're over with. Altho not looking forward to 1st August as we start ovaleap pen then too ,so I'll be getting 2 needles a day.

My husband did mine and we ended up getting in a routine but the first couple we were not! After that still had the odd one that you felt more than others, but for me I appreciated the support from him in doing and the care and attention he put into it.

I definitely recommend ice before the injection.

And I did ask him to do it slower sometimes too, so definitely a controlled speed. But when it was all in I asked him to count out loud for 5 seconds and then I would release the pinched skin as he pulled the needle out at the same time.

I did my own and sometimes I'd barely feel it and other times it hurt like ****! I'm sure it's not you, it's just one of those things. You're very good for getting involved and giving it a go! The pain is short-lived and hopefully will all be worth it for you both!

My partner does my injections too (I’m a wimp!) When we first started them, some of them hurt and he’d feel just as awful as you - but we’ve got better at them!

We’ve found that doing them in the fleshiest areas helped, and also doing them much slower. When he injects the fluid quickly, it really burns - no idea why. You could also try Emla cream (numbing cream) if it becomes a source of anxiety?

The whole IVF process is pretty traumatic most of the time and there’s plenty of pain and discomfort…. Just keep your end goal in sight though! It will all be worth it in the end. 🙏🏼

Hi Jas, unfortunately some of them do just really hurt. I like to do them myself so I am in more control of the pain- and to inject the solution as slowly as possible based on how much it's hurting. She might want to have a go doing it herself to see if it's anymore bearable for her. Also I put a wetted cotton pad on the injection site straight after which is soothing, although don't rub as this will cause bruising x

Hi, ice cube on it before to numb the area helps and meds not straight from fridge (just a few minutes outside). Pinching and in with the needle in the little roll as others said.

I did all my injections and it was sooo hit and miss. Sometimes I'd jab in my tummy and barely feel it, other times I felt the sharpness of the needle very acutely before it even broke the skin to the extent I could barely bring myself to push it in... Sometimes I poked around the area a bit to find a less sensitive spot. Not sure how your wife feels about that approach though 😂🤦🏼‍♀️

hey there! As an acupuncturist I can tell you that sometimes needles hurt. The simple explanation is that sometimes randomly the needle gets too close to a tiny nerve branch, or severs a tiny vein ( these often develop a bruise). For me if a needle hurts, I can often fix the problem by withdrawing the needle slightly. When this doesn’t work, I take the needle out and allow the pain to subside a bit, and then try a spot very close to, but not exactly the same spot. Between the two this always takes care of the pain. I’m not sure if you’re allowed to remove and reinsert the injection needle, but perhaps withdrawing it slightly would be ok and take care of the pain somewhat. Ask your doctor/nurse.

hi there JasW22 I’m sure the others have said it previously, but was my first time with ivf injections and I used an ice pack and it really helped before and after with the pain side of things-I would highly recommend wish you well ☺️
