Sugar consumption FET

Hi All

I’m due to start a second FET round in the next few weeks, and seem to have decided to obsess over my sugar consumption this round! I’m trying to cut down but finding it really difficult and don’t know if it actually makes a difference.

I just wondered if anyone has been given any advice or knows of any research around whether sugar consumption can affect implantation?

For reference I’m 31, BMI <30, no infertility diagnosis and typically have a small amount of chocolate (100kcals ish), two small biscuits and a can of Dr Pepper each day.

Thank you for your help!

Hey there. I decided to cut down on refined sugar in prep for my FET, but I didn't always do that, and wasn't super strict. I had fruit with plain yogurt and honey most mornings for breakfast, so that has some more natural sugars (from the fruit and honey). I also added some sugar to oatmeal a few days I think, but basically avoided sugary drinks and desserts. My doctor didn't say anything to me about diet or sugar intake, but my acupuncturist advised me to reduce my sugar because she thought a blood sugar spike could be less stable in terms of my hormone balance. x

Hi! I cut out sugar almost completely in the run up to my FET and during the first and second trimseter. I don't know whether it affects implantation but it does increase the risk of gestational diabetes and I knew I had some risk factors like PCOS and family history, so wanted to avoid it as much as possible. My test came out negative, which was a big relief. Good luck with the transfer!

Hiya, I am thinking I want to cut off refined sugar and processed foods from my diet - and keep fruit, honey and other natural goodness. I don't think I necessarily eat too much of it everyday, but when I am anxious I'll eat a lot of it in one go. Also, it's something I have not tried before so... why not give it a go? can't do any harm, can it? :) good luck x

Yes it’s the only thing I’ve not tried as well, I think it’s so hard as it’s my last vice after significantly changing the rest of my diet/lifestyle! Think I’ll give it my best shot but try not to beat myself up too much if I occasionally slip up as it’s already stressful enough! Good luck to you too x

Hi Pepperino. Your BMI is just on the upper limit accepted by the NHS for fertility treatment, so perhaps it is a good idea to reduce your sugar intake and lose a couple of pounds before continuing treatment. Good luck. Diane

Hi Diana, my BMI is below 30 and my NHS health board are looking at expanding the acceptable BMI range to 18-35 as research suggests success rates are not significantly different in the 30-35 group compared to the 25-30 group so not too worried about that side of it. I was more worried about any effects the spikes in blood sugar might have

No advice but I was healthy for my chemical, super unhealthy pigging out for my first little boy, and just eating whatever without thinking for my second little boy 💙 all the best xxx

I’m in my 2nd FET two week wait. First one was a BFN. Both times I have cut out sugary drinks and desserts, but I do have fruit (natural sugars) and I like my trek protein bars and other fairly healthy snack bars now and again- Nakd bars have been recommended to me by nutritionists. I think they want you to keep your blood sugars stable to avoid hormone spikes. It’s so hard giving up so much!!! I’ve never been told that sugar affects implantation, just to try and cut out refined foods and eat lots of whole cooked foods, loads of water and colourful veg
