CoQ10 amount confusion?

Hi all,

After a year of consultations, our NHS gynaecologist has essentially said nothing more they can do for me /us unless we pay for IVF given I’m now 41, which we can’t afford atm. But he did say we could start taking 300mg of CoQ10 twice a day, each. I could only find 200mg at Holland & Barrett at £34.99 for 30 so it’s going to be a pricey supplement if both taking twice a day.

Has anyone found a good price for a high dose?

Is Ubiquinol truly a higher grade?

I’m also vegetarian so prefer gelatine free but I may suck it up (literally 🙈) if it gives us better qlty from both sides.

appreciate any sources, hope everyone is well

300mg twice a day is the ubiquinone dose. Ubiquinol you can take less eg 200mg twice a day. I bought mine from iherb (it’s a US online pharmacy that ships free with Hermes). I used NOW brand ubiquinol. Costco sells ubiquinone in large tubs much cheaper than H&B, who are pricey for everything! Xx

thank you so much, sounds like I need to join Costco!

I took 400mg of ubinquol and took ‘HTN - health thru nutrition’ brand. They come in 100,200 and 600 tabs. Can get from Amazon. Not sure if it was the reason but I get 7 extra eggs this round from taking it. Praying they are mature & good quality will find out this week x

oh my goodness, best of luck for this week & for good news & thank you!

thank you so much. ❤️ I also took DHA which is supposed to be good, it was the zita west one. I think the uninquol I took was the one recommended in ‘it starts with the egg’ although I never read the book 😆 good luck xxx

ha, I have the book but I’m too scared to read it…maybe it goes in just by being on my bedside table 🤣🤣

Hi Darcy. I’m taking CoQ10 200mg, twice a day. I bought them from Amazon. The make is Nutravita (they’re vegan) and there are 120 in the bottle. I just checked, and they’re £22 at the moment x

I’ve been taking 400mg once a day of ubinquol. I got it from Amazon. Just checked and it’s currently out of stock but see others have suggested alternatives :-)

I agree the advice is very confusing. I was told to take 200mg a day of ubiquinol. I got some from Nature’s Best (not too expensive) but the packaging says to only take one a day, which is 100mg so that’s what I’m doing. About to start my first round of IVF so hopefully it has helped x

I have been switched to Ubiquinol by my doctor. H&B have 3for 2 offers which comes up more affordable.

I have been specifically recommended Solgar as it delivers the exact amount in to your body.

They only have 100 mg option and taking twice a day.

Good luck

We were advised to both take 300mg of coenzyme q10 3 times a day one with each meal to help improve egg quality and numbers and sperm quality before starting our final round. I found them on ebay link below. That round was successful and we actually had embryos to freeze something we'd never had before. We have just started taking coenzyme q10 again as we are going to try naturally this time, I wish we had known about it years ago.

thank you Stars, that’s the best price I’ve seen! We’ve been advised twice a day each - which is first time in a year anyone’s mentioned this supplement - I know it’s anecdotal but there are so many good stories on here, like yours, that why not?!

Hi Darcy, Stars very kindly gave me this brand recommendation last year too when I asked about coQ10. I took 3 tablets of this a day for about 2 months before my IVF, 3 months would have been better but there was some delivery confusion because I'm in Ireland. I did also take DHEA and inositol but it was the best round I've ever had with 3 good quality to freeze (I was 44 at the time) I had always taken Ubiquinol prior to my IVF's but never in this high dose. Who knows what made the difference but it's all so expensive so good to find a supplement that is cheaper but doesn't seem to compromise on quality.

You can get 200mg CoQ10 from boots online for £24 and sometimes they also have a half price offer on. It's not clear from the packaging if it's ubiquinone or ubiquinol, though. I've been told different doses by different doctors (really annoying). At one IVF clinic they suggested 200mg 3 x a day for women and 200mg a day for men. At another they asked me to reduce the 200mg 3x a day as that was too much but I have forgotten what dose they suggested. I believe for men it does appear to help but for women it's not clear whether it has an effect or not but I was told it won't hurt so you may as well try. Indeed it seems like results in the scientific literature are really mixed, which is maybe why there is a lot of confusion around doses to try. (It may be that it helps some women and not others perhaps.) In my case I thought it was worth trying but I think it's good to do other things as well like a mediterranean diet, taking omega-3 if you are not eating much fish, etc.. My best IVF round in terms of egg quality was after I started taking omega-3 but that might be an entire coincidence!

thanks Icepop! We have been told 300mg each, twice a day, but previously no other specialist has mentioned it at all over the last year so I agree, it’s so confusing!

Just checked the packaging of the boots CoQ10 that I have and I think it's not vegetarian unfortunately so perhaps that's not for you. Sorry should have checked beforehand!

oh gosh no worries! Thank you! It’s proving hard to find a vegetarian one - I’m wondering if I should have one for gelatine for the short term, if I can’t find an alternative 😬🙈

I took Pharmanord ubiquinol 3 x100mg a day. It’s pricey, but I’m one of those mugs who thinks you get what you pay for. (Someone told me that sometimes drug companies increase the price of OTC meds as part of their marketing strategy for people like me haha) xx
