Anyone experienced a dramatic AMH drop?

I had my AMH tested a year and half ago and everything was fine at 24 pmol/L. It was 35 at the time. Since then I've had several rounds of unsuccessful IUI, the last two of which ended in early miscarriage. I now want to move onto IVF so I had my AMH done again. I am now 37 and was shocked that it has fallen to 13.1 pmol/L. I know this is still OK for my age, but has anyone else experienced a dramatic drop like this? My underlying fear is that my AMH will continue to plummet and as I wait to get moved onto IVF (the waiting time is very long) and that my chances of success are also drastically falling.

AMH can vary. Last year in May my AMH was 5. I overhauled my diet and literally 5 months later it was 11.5. I’m 43 so no spring chicken either. I think it’s also looked at in conjunction with your AFC. It’s still a decent level so don’t worry too much about it.

Oh wow - that's great that you managed to more than double your AMH. There seems to be so much contradictory info out there with some clinics saying AMH can only go down and other studies saying it can fluctuate. I did the last AMH test in the last days of an early miscarriage bleed so I wondered if that might have affected it. Anyway it's good to know that you have a real life experience of AMH moving upwards. Thank you for sharing - it is reassuring and I wish you the very best on your journey

sorry to jump on but yes amh tests definitely can be affected by miscarriages-I was told to wait for a while after my last loss before doing a repeat test for this reason. One of mine came back lower as it was done straight after a miscarriage too. It went back to normal(poss bit lower) two months after I think it was. Tons of luck. Xx PS amh not the best indicator of outcome I remember being super stressed about it at the timexxx

I'm so sorry to know you've experienced pregnancy losses CassieJ. I'm sending you a virtual hug and a huge dose of compassion. Thank you for sharing part of you story with me. It's very reassuring to know that maybe I didn't do the AMH test at a particularly representative time. I think I'll leave it for a while and only test again if the clinic request it because sometimes all this info can be to stressful. I wish you all the luck in the world too

As you get older AMH swings are more likely. I had the same (dropped from 1.5ng/ml at 36 to 0.4 ng/ml at 39 - good candidate for IVF to not a good candidate kind of drop) and was devastated. Multiple retests later my actual drop was not that big (I averaged out at 1.25 ng/ml). My second opinion RE told me it was likely a result of having an AMH test around ovulation and to only do them day 1-3. Your dominate follicle releases hormones that suppress AMH (as dominate follicles is killing off other maturiting eggs) - this is more dramatic in older women as they have lower reserve anyhow. My AFC was always good and FSH was low.

Could this be an explanation for you? Timing sounds like it wasn't ideal?

Good luck xxx

Hi Jumpppy - thank you for the reply and wishes of good luck. It must have been so upsetting to receive results that seemed to suggest you were less of a good candidate for IVF. I'm so glad that you found out that the overall picture was more optimistic. It really is helpful to know that other people have experiences of fluctuating AMH. As you say, it might be that the timing of the test wasn't great. If I need to do another test, I'll do it in days 1-3 of the cycle

My Dr did tell me that once you reach 35 your egg quality will drop in the next couple of years but like the ladies have said it can vary and my own did when they retested. Mine had actually improved (still low side of normal for my age) but unfortunately I didn’t respond well to treatment. Everyone is different. Xx

Thank you for taking the time to reply Eggfreezing36. I'm sending you all the luck and good vibes for your treatment. I'm also going through fertility treatment as a single xx
