how long after a miscarriage can you start new treatment?

hi all,

Our 7 week scan was a week ago and sadly we saw an empty sac. We went to the epu on Saturday and discussed options for a planned miscarriage, but it came of its own accord on Sunday. Now I’m thinking about next steps and wondering how long I should wait before another fet? Mentally I feel completely ready but physically the M really took its toll (far more pain than I expected!) and I want to let my body recover so I have the best chance next time. Any advice greatly appreciated!

thanks all,

Xx

I had an empty sack from my first IUI (IVF didn't work for me, as I was a poor responder with non existent AMH). After the MC, which came on its own, I started with the next IUI on my following period. I think it was around 2 months later because the MC bleed/spotting took almost 3 weeks to go away. Not sure if they want you to wait a bit longer with FET though.

I think my clinic are recommending the same time frame, as the treatment isn't very invasive. It does meddle with the natural cycle though so i'm thinking one normal cycle might be sensible but I'm not sure why! Can I ask did you feel fully recovered by then?

Yes, I ended up being one of the lucky ones. I tried another IUI right after the MC but BFN. After that, I gave up on doctors and just did at home IUI and got pregnant on the second try. So basically 3 cycles after the blighted ovum, I got lucky. Baby is 15 months now. I was about to give up and do DE transfer because I was almost 42 at the time. The MC messed me up mentally though and I was so stressed during the pregnancy 😫 . Fingers crossed for you!

ah congratulations! Yes I can imagine if I ever get pregnant again I’ll be a bag of nerves after what’s happened! X

You can buy an IUI kit online and just do it at home after you track your ovulation. I used Moasie kit but there are others on the market. We did it because we could no longer bring ourselves to have sex lol after all that time of ttc. It got the job done though.

I’m so sorry for your loss 💗 My clinic wanted me to wait 3 months after mine before doing a FET (I think some others have a shorter time frame though) xx

I’m so sorry for your loss 💔 and for the pain you experienced. I had an early loss and did just want to get back to it once the physical part was over but everyone is different so I don’t think is a right or wrong here. My clinic wanted me to wait for another period after the miscarriage bleed before we started treatment again. And since that was a down reg FET for us there was also another period again after prostrap so the actual transfer would have been 3 months later which felt about right to me physically and mentally too xx

I think my clinic has said the same (although they've been a bit vague) but because its just a normal fet, the transfer would be around 2 weeks after my next period, maybe 6/7 weeks after the miscarriage which seems a bit soon?

So sorry for your loss. I’ve been through exactly the same as you. I had an MMC and had to go through a medical miscarriage in October 2021 and didn’t start another round until May 2022. My clinic really wanted my cycle to settle down into its normal routine again but as we’re NHS I also think there was a bit of a queue to get back in again. I also felt mentally ready to start another cycle straight after but in hindsight, I think it was a good thing to focus on day to day life again for a while. We can get so hung up on it all that it’s good to refocus again after a loss. Wishing you the best of luck!

sorry to hear that :( sending hugs. I had empty sac at 7 weeks too last year, they wanted me to wait for two periods to happen before the next embryo transfer. I think any sooner would have been too soon for me anyway, even this felt quite fast xx

I'm really sorry you've been through that. I had two in a row on fresh transfers and my way of dealing with it was to go straight back in for another transfer, so started my FET the period after the bleed from the loss - i.e., no break. It was right for me as I didn't have any complications and it gave me something to focus on. But it depends on a lot of factors including how recovered you are physically and mentally, and then your clinic - private will often be ok to go again straight away but NHS like you to have at least one period in between.

Sorry you’ve been through this, it’s heartbreaking.

We had no heartbeat last week, my MC begun last night and I’m hoping I get the all clear 2m in a follow up with EPU. My clinic want my uterus clean and HCG level less than 5 to begin new treatment. Unfortunately this isn’t my first MC, when I had my first MC I started my treatment on the next bleed, I was so eager to start and sadly led to a failed transfer. I regret not taking more time, when I look back at photos I looked bloated, grey and depressed.

My second MC, I took 5 months, during this time my clinic done a few tests and bloods etc and made changes. I cried for days at the thought of 5 months but in the end it came around quickly and was helpful as I got my life back a little. I counted down the time in weekends off work rather than months, it made it easier for me.

IVF is a head wreck on top of experiencing loss, it’s really tough on the body and mind. What’s my plan next, hopefully the clinic will have reviewed my case and advise next week what my future treatment plan is, fingers crossed no more than 2 bleeds away. I heard someone on TV, can’t recall who but they asked this question to a Dr and he said, are you prepared for another MC and if your answer is no, that’s your answer, your not ready for treatment right now. I found this upsetting but a very helpful way to look at it.

Lots of support at this difficult time, hope this reply is helpful.

should have said my clinic insist on at least one bleed after Mc before starting again. And since ours will be a down reg FET there is also another period again after prostrap so the actual transfer would is 3 months later

hi sjlrun, I’m so sorry you’ve had to go through this again, I hope you’re doing ok. Thanks so much, that is really helpful info, and good advice, I feel that mentally I am ready, even if the same happens again. But my body feels so bruised! I think I’ll see how I feel in a few weeks and make a decision then. I really hope they let you have another transfer soon, and have everything crossed that this will be the one that works for you 🤞 xx
