First day of medication for Round 1 of ICSI, husband tested positive for COVID

conceptionimpossible profile image

I've just started on norethisterone this morning. Five minutes later, my husband did a covid test for work that was positive. Does anyone know if clinics tend to cancel treatment if you get covid? Our forms asked us to declare if we'd had covid within the last 90 days so we're getting quite anxious. (Also those two pink lines felt like such a mockery - really adding insult to injury there!!)

I don't know about what you take the norethisterone for (it's not at all very common to use it for ivf treatment in my country), how soon they planned to take you in for a scan at the clinic or how the rules for isolation/quaranteene are where you are, but what I seem to be able to find through a quick google search, is that the norethisterone is used to control your cycle before starting the real stimulation process. Then I'd probably not be too worried. For how many days have they prescribed that you take it? You could make sure you too get it now, so you're done with it till you'll have the treatment which require that you actually comes to the clinic 😉 (I myself made sure I got Covid a couple of weeks before I was due to my ivf treatment. It worked perfectly well 😆)

Yes, the norethisterone is to make sure I have a bleed at the time the clinic want before I start stims in early April. I'm taking it until 28 March. I'm so torn as it feels like we have time and we can still go ahead but we've not been able to speak to the clinic today and some of the HFEA information suggests that you need to cancel treatment and reschedule. I guess we need to wait and see, and maybe now my husband is positive I'll end up finding out if your method of getting covid first works!

Good luck with everything! Hoping your husband, and maybe also you, get a bearable time with covid. It's a bad cold, yes, but nothing to die from, in my experience ❤

Sperm is made up to three months before ejaculation and a high temperature or illness can have an impact on sperm make up and quality. Some clinics are hesitant to do a cycle if you have had covid as we are not clear on the impact on sperm/eggs yet. They also won’t let you in the clinic if you are testing positive so it may depend on your timelines as to the impact x

Yes, this is what we've been reading today and we've not been able to get through to the clinic to confirm. My poor husband is feeling so stressed, like he's made everything fail, so he's been frantically searching for details of what impact covid has on sperm - I think he feels a bit better as he's read that the main study has shown effects on motility so far but not much else, so if we're having ICSI maybe we still have a chance, and we're next scheduled for appointments from 8 April so there's some time. x

But not everyone getting covid gets a fever or much symptoms at all. I suppose it depends a lot on the severity of the illness 😊

Hey hun hang in there and just speak to your clinic. Are you having Norethisterone for 10 days to time your period before stims? If yes, shouldn't be a problem and they can still go ahead with it cause in 10 days he should be fine and negative for COVID. Take care of yourself ❤️xx

Thank you. ♥️ I'm having it for 12 days, then no scans until 8 April and collection a week later, so we've got time, we're just quite anxious! xx

Hi lovely. If it helps, we had ICSI within the 3 months after having Covid (our clinic does not ask you to cancel), and I was super, super worried we wouldn't get any embryos, but we actually more than on our first round when we hadn't been sick.

However, I do think it's always a good idea to get your clinic to store some frozen sperm for this kind of eventuality—just in case!

Hi, I literally asked my clinic yesterday regarding this as I had covid end of Feb , they said it was completely fine for me as no evidence it can effect egg quality but she said if my husband got covid , they would delay for 90 days or cancel if I had started as it has an effect on sperm. I’m really sorry, it’s so stressful.

Not all clinics do this and I know of a few friends who go pregnant just after covid!!

Wishing you lots of luck x

Thank you for all the comments and help. My husband tested negative Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, had one positive test yesterday morning, but has since passed a temperature check without any problems, had a negative test yesterday lunchtime and two negative tests this morning. I know false positives are unlikely, but given the pattern in his testing and his temperature being fine, I think we're leaning towards thinking this was one and maybe checking in with a GP. xx
