First gynae appointment ttc, what to expect and bmi question

Hi all I have my first gynae appointment tomorrow and I'm really nervous. I dont know what to expect. It's taken 3 years to be referred. I have pcos and dr said shell refer me to gynae as time is ticking on. I'm 36 with no children and I have pcos and have very irregular periods, was diagnosed when gp referred me.

What can I expect from the first appointment.

Will they be doing any kinds of tests or anything? Or is the first one just a chat? Are there any follow up appointments or is it only 1 appointment ?

They didnt send me letter beforehand just rang to offer appointment so I dont know, is it just me needs to go or does my partner need to go aswell?

One thing I'm really concerned about is I've been reading online people refused any treatment because of their bmi is over 30. I admit I'm 13 stone and need to lose weight. My dr never even mentioned anything about that. Will they flat out refuse to offer me any treatment based on first appointment? Or will they still offer any tests to check what specifically is wrong and then decide based on the test results.

If that was the case do they offer you a callback after youve lost the weight or do they just shut the door on you.

Hiya, at my first NHS gynae appt the nurse looked through all mine and my husband's test results (we both had to attend) and we both got weighed. My GP had arranged all our tests prior to referral, but if gynae want you to have any other tests/examinations then they will arrange that with you. They were really strict with BMI being under 30, and I'll admit I had really struggled to lose enough weight and only just scraped through! For me, I'd had an initial telephone consultation with a doctor before this in-person gynae appt and it was then that I was told about the BMI criteria. I was told to ring them when I'd lost the weight, which took me 6 months (1stone 7lbs) but they were happy to keep my referral open so I didn't have to go through GP again. We then had to have one further appt with gynae before they referred us to the fertility clinic. I'm not sure if all this is standard, but this was my experience so I hope it helps 🙂

Hello how are you? With regards to the bmi I think it really depends where you are. I was point blank refused unless I could get below 30. They then told me that if I was 30 and they put me forward for treatment at my next appointment in a few months they would weigh me again and if it was over it wouldn’t go ahead 🤦‍♀️ It was a nightmare. I lost 5 stone but couldn’t get the last few pounds to shift. Doctors have since told me that losing weight so fast was detrimental and sent my hormones all over the place. Literally couldn’t win xxx

My initial appointment was Jan 2017 and they organised a scan and tests for both my husband and I to try and determine what our issues were and what treatment we would need. Once they decided we were unlikely to get pregnant naturally and would need treatment they advised us of the waiting list and that I needed to be under a bmi of 30. They made me an app to go back in May and see how I was doing. There was a misunderstanding and when I went back I was told I’d done really well for losing 3 stone but was still 3lbs over what they wanted and that they wouldn’t put me on the list. I was so gutted as having seen I could lose 3 stone they wouldn’t put me forward for treatment (and bear in mind this is just the waiting list) for the sake of 3lbs. I was also due to go on 2 bigs back to back family hols after the app and knew it would have to wait till after them to lose the extra 3lbs. They agreed that once if was off I could get my GP to let them know rather than have to wait for another app. My GP contacted them in Aug and I was notified I was put on the list in Sept and it then took till the following June (2018) before we got treatment. Good luck. X

Hope your appointment goes well - just stay calm and any questions you do not understand ask them to explain it fully to you As for the BMI issue be sure to ask what the implications are - what is your BMI - if you need to lose weight what is the time scale for this - and the number you call when you achieve a BMI below 30Thinking of you
