We had egg retrieval today, nothing to retrieve, seems that I ovulate earlier at some point. Just curious if this could have been avoided by having blood tests during stims!? I only had day 7 and 10 scans, no bloods done, short protocol. Thanks a lot!!!

Hi there - are you private or NHS? Shouldn’t matter of course but I usually only hear of no blood tests and hardly any scans on NHS rounds? I wouldn’t be happy with that at all. For comparison my private clinic scanned every 48 hours (sometimes daily as got closer) and the same with blood tests We’re you given anything like cetrotide to stop you ovulating?
Private, they haven’t done no blood tests, which I thought is bizzare. We are so upset. I have low amh, after fibroids surgery I ended up with low amh, we knew we can’t expect a high number of follicles, we ended up with 3 follicles after a short protocol.Day 10 stims they were 10-19-17 mm. I was taking Fyremadel. So so disappointing, makes you lose faith in clinics/consultants.
I had the same issue, with my first round of ivf. I swapped to milder ivf for my low amh and strangely got more eggs on higher doses and was scanned frequently to the extent that we didn’t even use cetrotide/fyremadel on one of the rounds. And like ivfgotadream has said, once I was private I was scanned frequently and blood tests at every scan - you could try complaining to your clinic?
Are they sure you ovulated? So sorry to hear it, it’s really tough xx
Hi Orla9298, yes, it’s thought, I thought of all sorts of scenarios that could happen, but not at this. I don’t even know to whom to complain!? Is our second cycle, first cancelled before egg collection, couldn’t access left ovary due fibroids, for some reason only my left ovary is producing follicles. Is what I understood that I ovulated and couldn’t retrieve nothing. We have a follow up somewhere in December, maybe we get a bit more clarity.
Yeah, this is really a hard journey. I hope they provide some assurance that this won't happen next time...
I also used to just have day 7 and day 10 scans and no blood tests so I think that is fairly standard for some clinics. I’m so sorry it’s backfired for you it’s just so unfair xx
Hey x this happened to me but they picked up I ovulated a couple of days before egg pick up via blood test. I moved clinics since then and they don’t normally do bloods during stims and it’s never happened to me again.
Unfortunately it happens even when taking meds to stop you from ovulating. It’s rare but it does happen.
I think it happens so infrequently that some clinics don’t see the point in doing bloods to check.
Maybe on your next cycle you could ask them to monitor you closely so it doesn’t happen again.
It’s such a roller coaster. I went into my first scan yesterday and have 12 follicles.Got some bloods taken and was told today my LH has surged too early so the cycle has been cancelled 😞
Ohhh, sorry to hear that Beclp, is just not fair!! I hope you are oke. I feel a bit better today, but not fully. I hope we will have next cycle in Jan, latest Feb, hopefully I will get some answers at the review in few weeks. I will be 43 next year, we started this journey a year ago, we had a cycle cancelled day 10, fibroids surgery-recovery time 6 months, and now no eggs. Thinking of you !! 🤗
Thank u x yeah it would be nice to have some answers but unfortunately it’s just the roll of the dice sometimes. We just have to keep the faith that everything will work out as it should. I’m 42 next year and started this journey a year ago because my partner had a vasectomy but now we have recently split due to the stress of it all.
I’ve decided to keep going and freeze my eggs. Even though I’m over 40 I figured it might be worth it to freeze them now and then if I meet someone new I’ve got them there and I don’t have to stress about getting older. Maybe I will end up using donor sperm.
Hi lovely! I hope you are oke. I just needed some time off, didn’t use much my phone-internet- Just wanted to say you are very brave doing this on your own, takes lots of strength. Send you a big hug !
My clinic scanned me only twice each time before egg retrieval with no blood test also. I was on long protocol both times and each time eggs were collected. So it does seem pretty standard. But I think you should talk with them why this could happened, and how to prevent it in the future.
Thank you zytajones, I will definitely ask at next review what can be done forward. Is just hard, I feel a bit better today, but my head still spins and can’t relax at all.
I'm with you. It must be heartbreaking to wake up to such a news. I hope you can skip the work maybe, and go for a nice long walk, or go for a meal, or whatever which could distract you from the whole IVF world, just for some time 🤗🥰
I only had 2-3 scans each cycle and no blood tests. I think it is more common not to do bloods than to do them but I can see the advantage. I'm so sorry this happened to you. Premature ovulation seems much more common on short protocol so if long is an option for you it might help xx
I understood due low Amh, my age 42 they will stick to short protocol, we have a review in 2 weeks and see what can be done. Just a bit scared to move forward right now. I have this flashes this can happen again.
Hi lovely,
I'm so sorry to hear about your retrieval. I know how devastating it is as on my first round I had no eggs collected either.
Although my clinic did scans and blood tests every 48 hours while I was doing stims they didn't see it coming. In my case they think it was either empty follicle syndrome or I needed a stronger trigger.
So on second round they upped my trigger to 15000 Gonasi and they managed to get 3 eggs.
Is this your first round? They told me that Sometimes the first round is a learning curve not that it makes it any easier!
Good luck sweetheart and I'm here if you need to have a chat or have any questions ❤
Hi Lillyx31, thanks for your reply and huge congratulations for the good news!!!💥💥🎉🎉 it just shows it takes one fighter 🤗 It’s my first cycle we get to try egg collection, had one in April but cancelled day 10 due fibroids, had to Have a surgery to remove them before move forward.
I really really hope we will have a better outcome next cycle, and that they learned something from this one. I did trigger with Buserillin, I have to trust them they do the best.
Ugh, I'm so sorry: this must be so frustrating. My clinic scanned every other day and decided whether I needed blood tests done based on the scans. When it showed I (also) had only produced 3 follicles they really ramped up the blood tests and in the end, decided I should have my trigger shot a day early because they were worried I might ovulate.
I think you should ask your consultant why you didn't have blood tests done and why you had so few scans. If they don't have a good answer, maybe you could complain and ask for a refund or consider changing clinics? At the very least, they might change your plan for next time.
Hey lovely!!! Thanks for your reply! Is what makes it harder, and even more painful the thought they could have done more, keeping a closer eye on how the stim is going, even cancelling if that were the case or have the trigger injection earlier. I doubt we will get any refund back, I don’t even know where/to whom to complain. We have a review meeting beginning of December, curious what the consultant would have to say.I hope you are oke! 🤗
Uff I know! So painful when you feel like it could have been avoided. It really sucks. I think it's worth expressing your disappointment to the consultant, though; hopefully, they will at least be able to explain why they took the approach they did and then come up with a plan you're more comfortable with for next time. If you did want to complain, The HFEA has a short guide here: hfea.gov.uk/contact-us/maki....
I'm good thanks, lovely. Disappointingly, We weren't able to do a transfer this time for various reasons, but by some miracle from my 3 little follicles, we got two embryos for the freezer using ICSI. We start the second round in January to hopefully do a fresh transfer (might be the same time you start again too?!)
Hey lovely! Haven’t been on the site for a while, just needed some time off. No idea when we start next cycle, maybe January or February, curious to see what the consultant has to say. 🤗
